    3. If he was the same Arthur B. Curtis listed in DC census in 1910, then he was probably not Irish. He is listed as mulatto, which could include some Irish parentage or even Native American. Do you know the address of the store? I lived in the DC area in the late 1950s. You might want to try to check a 1920 or better a 1930 census. Sorry, I don't have those. Also old DC directories for the man, the store address, etc. if you can locate them. I think the Nat'l Archives has a lot of the old directories on microfilm. --- Patricia J Salis <pjsalis@hal-pc.org> wrote: > I'm looking for information on Arthur B. > (Baldwin) Curtis, proprietor of Curtis > Furniture Co. in Washington, D.C., probably in > the 1940s and 1950s. 1. [CURTIS] David Curtis d. in Baptistown, NJ
    2. Dear Kathie, I know of no David Curtis who was a descendant of Jonathan Curtis of Berkeley County, WV who returned to NJ. There was a grandson of Jonathan's named David Curtis who m. an Elizabeth Hedges but he did not go to NJ as far I know. Also, his birth year is given as 1780 by other researchers. If your David Curtis died in Baptistown, NJ I would say that there is a high likelihood that he was related to the Rev. Thomas Curtis. I will see what I kind find and let you know if I have any luck. Surnames: Curtis, Trusdale, Snedacher, Billings, Akers, Whitney, Blevins, McMahan, McCracken, Freeman, Story, Brown, Wyatt Classification: Obituary Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/TmQ.2ACIB/2071 Message Board Post: Mr. James F. Curtis died at his home 2-1/2 miles west of Manchester on July 23, 1890. Deceased was born in West Liberty, West Virginia, July 13, 1812. He was first married Oct. 23, 1833 to Miss Sarah Snedacher, who died May 7, 1839, leaving two little girls. He was married the second time Aug. 22, 1839, to Miss Nancy Trusdale, and they journeyed together for nearly 51 years, dividing their joys and bearing the burdens of life. To them were born 13 children, making 15 in all, of whom five preceded him to the spirit world; and by these children he had 76 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. The deceased confessed in Christ in his twenty-first year, and was baptized by that great and good man, Alexander Campbell. He erected the family altar, read the scriptures, and prayed in his family, and acknowledged Christ before his fellowmen. He took a deep interest and an active part in all the interest of the church till age and infirmities came upon him. He was noted for his charity, always ready to lend a helping hand to those in distress, and always among the first in the neighborhood to visit the sick and afflicted. He also took an active part in all the political questions of the day, and in 1857 he was elected an associate justice, resigning April 12, 1858, because of the issuance of the railroad bonds by a majority of the court. But the confidence which in the fall of 1864, by electing him to represent them in the State Legislature, a position he filled to the satisfaction of all. He was a life-long democrat, but was not so shallow in his views as to think that everything he did not approve of was a fraud, therefore commanded the respect of all opposing parties. In the spring of 1839 he left his native state, with its rocks and hills, and sought a home on the plains of this prairie state. He purchased the place he was living on at the time of his death, then covered with dense thickets and tall prairie grass, and here for over half a century he has lived and toiled and raised his family, known and respected by all. He lived to see all of his children married and living close to him, with the exception of one or two. He was always a kind-hearted father, and was never in a more pleasant mood then when surrounded by his children and their families, a fact noted by all the community. His funeral was preached on the 24th at the family residence, by Rev. Vandervort of White Hall, after which his remains were interred in the Bower Cemetery, followed by a large concourse of mourning relatives and friends. To the aged widow and family the community extend their heartfelt sympathy in their bereavement.

I did look for the two NGSQ articles by Cook which you mentioned. It has been a few years but as I recall I could only find one of them (not the 1960 one). I will look again next time I am at the library. I have been working with Dick Curtis on a CURTIS DNA project. A male descendant with the Curtis surname who seems well documented to be descended from the John Curtis who married Ann Revell had his DNA compared with a Joshua Curtis RWS who was from Wilkes County, NC and who died in Davidson County, TN in 1818. They matched perfectly, as well as with my known male Curtis cousin of Winston County, AL. Joshua Curtis was, according to my massive amount of research and circumstantial evidence (although I don't have the exact lineage pinned down) a grandson of Jonathan Curtis of Berkeley County, WV. Also, Jonathan Curtis of Berkeley County, WV was one and the same as Jonathan Curtis of Burlington County, NJ (brother to the Primitive Baptist minister Rev. Thomas Curtis who married Alice Merrill). We will soon have the DNA sample from a descendant of this Berkeley County, WV Jonathan Curtis and if it matches the other three I will consider this further proof of my theory. I would be interested in whether your conclusion is based on anthing other than the articles by Cook and also on what he based his conclusion. I will check again with my collaborating researcher who arranged for her cousin to submit his DNA to make sure we are talking about the John Curtis who married Ann Revell. If this is correct and if my theory is correct, the Northamptonshire, England line of Thomas Curtis (friend of George Fox and mentioned in his autobiography) was the ancestor of both John and Jonathan. Could it be that there was indeed a relationship between the Derbyshire and Northamptonshire CURTIS that has been previously unknown? Ruth ==== CURTIS Mailing List ==== Forgotten how to unsubscribe? 3. Ruth, I am descended from the David Curtis family of Baptisttown in N.J. I believe that David and his wife Elizabeth Smith are cousins of the Rev. Thomas Curtis family but can not find a definite tie. Do you know if a grandson from Va. moved back to NJ with the Baptist branch of the family? My David was born 1763, I am not sure where, but he died in 1848 and is buried in Baptisttown. Thank you, Kathie ----- Original Message ----- From: Rngrav@aol.com<mailto:Rngrav@aol.com> To: CURTIS-L@rootsweb.com<mailto:CURTIS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, February 22, 2004 4:52 PM Subject: Re: [CURTIS] Re: CURTIS FAMILY NEW JERSEY Dear Jack, I am working with Dick Curtis to recruit CURTIS descendants for the DNA study. We already have a descendant of John Curtis who m. Anne Revell and to my delight the results confirmed the theory I developed after several years of intensive research--that this CURTIS line of Burlington County, NJ (Thomas Curtis b. about 1600 and a friend of George Fox) is related to Joshua Curtis RWS of Wilkes County, NC, Washington County, TN and Davidson County, TN as well as to my CURTIS cousin in Winston County, AL. My theory also involves a Jonathan Curtis who would have been a nephew of your John Curtis if my information based on the research on others is correct. This Jonathan Curtis was the brother of a Primitive Baptist minister Rev. Thomas Curtis who died in Baptistown, NJ about 1749 if my memory serves me here. Jonathan Curtis left NJ sometime after 1706 and in 1719 was living in the Cecil and Baltimore County, MD (probably Deer Creek area which is now Harford County). By 1735 he was in Orange County, VA and died in Berkeley County, WV around 1757. His son or grandson was (I think, no proof yet) Samuel Curtis who went to the Yadkin River area of western NC and was part of the Sandy Creek Baptist community in Rowan County, NC. He was a Regulator as were many in this community, which means he was a part of the pre Revolutionary movement. We will soon have the DNA results of a descendant of this Jonathan Curtis of Berkeley County, WV and hopefully this will further confirm my theory. While both Curtis families in Burlington Co were Quakers, perhaps they are from one English family which had removed to various parts of England before heading to the colony of West Jersey.
