A male descendant with the Curtis surname who seems well documented to be descended from the John Curtis who married Ann Revell had his DNA compared with a Joshua Curtis RWS who was from Wilkes County, NC and who died in Davidson County, TN in 1818. They matched perfectly, as well as with my known male Curtis cousin of Winston County, AL. Joshua Curtis was, according to my massive amount of research and circumstantial evidence (although I don't have the exact lineage pinned down) a grandson of Jonathan Curtis of Berkeley County, WV. Also, Jonathan Curtis of Berkeley County, WV was one and the same as Jonathan Curtis of Burlington County, NJ (brother to the Primitive Baptist minister Rev. Thomas Curtis who married Alice Merrill). > > We will soon have the DNA sample from a descendant of this Berkeley County, WV Jonathan Curtis and if it matches the other three I will consider this further proof of my theory. > > I would be interested in whether your conclusion is based on anthing other than the articles by Cook and also on what he based his conclusion. I will check again with my collaborating researcher who arranged for her cousin to submit his DNA to make sure we are talking about the John Curtis who married Ann Revell. If this is correct and if my theory is correct, the Northamptonshire, England line of Thomas Curtis (friend of George Fox and mentioned in his autobiography) was the ancestor of both John and Jonathan. > > Could it be that there was indeed a relationship between the Derbyshire and Northamptonshire CURTIS that has been previously unknown? > > Ruth > > > ==== CURTIS Mailing List ==== > Forgotten how to unsubscribe? 1. Re: [CURTIS] "mulatto" and census takers
    2. Genie
    3. Right, I should have been more clear. While the technical definition of a mulatto is one who has one white parent and one black parent, I was referring in my post to census taker usage. The census takers couldn't always figure out one's "race" any more than we can today and they didn't have a lot of options to choose from. When they came across people who they thought were part Caucasian and part some other, darker-skinned race, they would sometimes list them as mulatto, especially if they were living in a mostly black neighborhood, or if the persons themselves did not know (or state) their "race." Thus some mixed-race white-Indian-black folks, among others, were listed as mulatto. I have even seen cases of people being listed as black in one census, mulatto in another, and Indian in a third. I mentioned this in this case in part because the gentleman in question, and his parents, were from Nebraska, making Native American ancestry, at least in part, a possibility to consider. --- Pat Curtis <anglers@bullshoals.net> wrote: > Mulatto means the child of mixed origin = a > child of a Negro and a white > person. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
