CURTIS, engineer of Long Spur Door and Sash Factory, one mile north of this place, met with a horrible death last night while working among the wheels and shafts in the basement of the factory. By some means his clothing became entangled in a swift revolving shaft and he was wound around the shaft several times before his clothing gave way and he fell to the ground. His left arm was torn from his body close to the shoulder. Several ribs on the left side were broken and the left leg between the knee and ankle was broken in three places. He was a man of 38 years of age, unmarried, and his only known relatives are a father and a nephew who live near Grants Pass, Oregon, and who have been notified by wire of the accident. Curtis had worked for this Company for several years and was regarded as a faithful employee. He lived about three hours after the accident. A companion who was working with Curtis witnessed the accident but was powerless to help his suffering fellow workman.

My g grandfather Leonard Janmes Curtis, son of Alfred Curtis born 1821 in Shoreditch and a jeweller in Islingotn, seems to have a lifelong conenctin with the place. He lived there with his wife Emma Laura née Bustard, whilst commuting down to South West London and his mistress, the rogue. My great-aunt says that Emma had red hair, so I'd be interested to know if your Mum remembers any details. I know there were several children from their marriage.

Dr. Elijah's parents (Abner Curtiss & Persis Howe-Curtiss)were married on 3-4-1807 in Worcester....and Abner is listed as Abner of Dalton and Mrs. Persis Howe-Salter..so must have been her 2nd marriage. Persis Howe-Curtiss was born ca 1783 in Worcester, MASS, daughter of Joel Howe & Mary Gates. I would love to be able to find more about Abner Curtiss (Dr. Elijah's father) and his siblings....

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/TmQ.2ACIB/1646.1.1.1.3.1.1 Message Board Post: In my NJ Curtis research, there is missing information regarding an Elijah Curtis, but I don't think he went up to New England, but rather South as some of his cousins & siblings did. The Burlington/Monmouth Co. NJ CURTIS family came into America directly to Burlington WestJersey in the mid-1600s (Quakers)---by 1800, some were moving South & some Westward, or into the cities of NY & Philadelphia. Your Elijah Curtis, who married another NewEnglander, may have descended from the CURTIS brothers who came in through Boston in the 1600s. Have you checked the holdings at NewEnglandHistoric&Gen.Society? Being here in Boston, I wish I had more NewEngland lines which removed to NJ, since NEHGS is has such an excellent collection (also, on-line for members) for New England records. Gloria
