Does anyone know whose widow she was? She is the only Cummins (no Cummings) listed in the book. 307. [Lancaster Journal] April 13 1827 (Friday) Married on Tues last by Rev. 1790 Census for Lancaster County, PA has five Cummins (spelled variously): Cummings, George-20 [Manheim Twp] 01-00-01-00-00 [one free white male over 16 including head of family and one free white female] Cummings, John -5 [Colerain Twp] 01-00-03-00-00 [one male 16+ and three females] Cummins, William-25 [Rapho Twp] 01-02-03-00-00 [one male 16+, two under 16 and three females] Cummons, Elizabeth-1 [Hart Twp] 00-00-02-00-00 [two white] Cummons, (Widow)-26 [Sadsbury Twp] 00-01-02-00-00 [one male under 16, two females] None had "other freed persons" or slaves in their households. Of these, only the name John Cummins appears in the 1770 Lancaster City Tax records (for Sadsbury Twp). Anybody know who these people are? Could be that Widow Cummons of Sadsbury was the widow of John Cummins (son of James) whose will was probated 27 Aug 1790. Tricia
The Dictionary of Irish Family Names by Ida Grehan (Roberts Rinehart Publishers, 1997) says" CUMMINS ó Comáin ó Cuimín Commons, Comyns, Hurley This surname, which is numerous in every part of Ireland, lends itself to many interpretations. Some say that is comes from the Irish word _cam_, meaning crooked. Others, incorrectly, think it came from the word _camán_, a stick for playing hurling, which caused some people to anglicize their name to Hurley! In the sixth century, before surnames came into use, St. Common came from Ulster and founded Roscommon and a number of other monasteries in the west of Ireland. The Cummins were administrators of the church of St. Cuimón Fada of Kilcummin in the bay of Killala in Connacht. Cormac O Cuimón (1703-86) was one of a band of blind bards and story-tellers who flourished at that time. The Comyns who were driven out from County Clare escaped to France, where they were accepted into the French nobility. Here they suffered the fate of their fellow aristocrats and were guillotined during the French Revolution. Other Cummins were more fortunate and fought in the Spanish Netherlands, and were absorbed into the nobility of Spain. JOHN CUMMINS, a ship's carpenter wrote a _Narrative of the loss of HMS Wager During a Voyage to the South Seas, 1740-41. DANNY CUMMINS, a Dubliner born in 1914, was for many years one of Ireland's most popular entertainers in pantomime and revue, for which he wrote his own sketches. GERALDINE CUMMINS (1890-1969) of Cork was a novelist and biographer of the Somerville and Ross duo who originated the stories of the famous _Irish RM_ television series. She also played hockey for Ireland and was famed for her facility for "automatic writing". Her sister, Ashley, was also an international hockey player. A detailed pedigree of the County Cork family of Cummins can be found in the 1976 edition of _Burke's Irish Family Records_.

Hi, I had actually meant to post this stuff to the Cummins list but have been swamped. I'll do that now <g>. I am pretty sure my *CHARLES CUMMINS (1791-12 Nov 1837, 46 yrs, tombstone) who married Catherine McAlevy (b. abt 16 July 1801-16 Jan 1846 tombstone) is the brother of Col. WILLIAM CUMMINS (23 Nov 1797-1 Apr 1865, age 67) and of ROBERT CUMMINS (Abt 1785-27 May 1858, age 73, tombstone). There is also an ELIZABETH CUMMINS (b. abt 3 Aug 1790-3 Oct 1812, 22 yrs 2 mos, tombstone) buried in United Presbyterian Cemetery at McAlevy's Fort. I think they are all siblings but can't absolutely prove it. William and Robert both married Sterret sisters. Just looking at the naming patterns I had hazarded a guess that their parents might be named James and Sarah....but that's kind of wobbly. Had also guessed they originally came from either Lancaster/Cumberland counties. Robert and Charles lived in McAlevy's Fort, Jackson Township, Huntingdon County (Charles also in Barree Twp) but William lived in Brown Township, Mifflin County (not too far away). William married three times: (1) 13 Nov 1817, Sara Sterret. (2) ca 1831, Martha Montgomery McElheny [have no idea if one of her surnames is a maiden name or middle name, i.e. if she was a widow or not] (3) ca 1844, Jane (???). Robert married Mary5 Sterrett ca 1811. All three were farmers and Presbyterian. Charles is on the 1820 and 1830 census for Barree Township, Huntingdon County, PA. Robert and William both appear on the 1850 census--Robert, as bizarre as it sounds, is listed as Robert Cunningham. On the 1790 census there are no Cummins/Cummings in Huntingdon Co. but 16 in PA. On the 1810 index there is a Cummins in Westmoreland County and a Charles Cummins in Southampton Township, Franklin County, PA. On the 1830 census there are Rolient [sic, Robert probably] Charles and David in Huntingdon and on the 1840 census Robert, Catherine [widow of Charles] and Alexander in Huntingdon, PA. The Sterrett genealogy filled out Robert and William's lines, but I'm still guessing at my own. Figuring that whoever wasn't accounted for in their lines, probably belongs to Charles and Catharine (McAlevy) Cummins: ?? James Cummins buried in United Presbyterian Cemetery at McAlevy's Fort b. abt 5 Jan 1819 d. 17 June 1850 (age 31, tombstone) ?? William Cummins b. abt 27 Apr 1820 d. 27 Oct 1855 (35 yrs 4 m 27 d tombstone UPC). Merchant on 1850 census. Wife Margaret H. (???) [He did name a son Charles and that name does not appear in the lines of Robert and William. Would probably have been named for his putative mother's father: William McAlevy. Margaret could be a Huston, Hunter, Hanna or Hughes, all common surnames in that area.] *John Cummins b. 1822-1879 (I'm sure of him). Married three times and had (?) eight children. He also named a son Charles. Sarah Cummins b. abt 18 Apr 1825-18 Oct 1842 (shares a tombstone with Ruth UPC) I'm sure of her. Robert Cummins b. abt 1827 (Farmer on 1850 census, wife Ruth (???). His property is right next door to that of John Cummins and was probably split between them when their father died. He and Ruth are not planted in UPC, unfortunately] ?? Robert Cummins b. 16 June 1827 d. 27 May 1882 near Milroy, Mifflin, PA; married 9 March 1854 to Catherine Ann McNitt [question, is this the same Robert as above??? did he remarry? birthdates are very close. I'm guessing it's the same Robert, but not positive.] ?? David Cummins b. abt 5 Oct 1831 d. 8 Aug 1862 Fortress Monroe, age 30, Co. C 49th Regt. PA Volunteers (planted at UPC) [Couldn't find him on census] ?? W. Cummins b. abt 1832 (age 18, miner on 1850 census Warriors Mark Twp., Huntingdon) Not enough info to even guess if he belongs......and dob conflicts with Ruth who is a known child. I don't think he's very likely. Ruth Cummins b. 3 Oct 1832 d. 14 April 1898 UPC (shares tombstone with Sarah) Named after her maternal grandmother Ruth (Allen) McAlevy. Second wife of Rev. John McCleary Adair. (I'm sure of her) Would appreciate any help in figuring out where to park these folks or who their parents were. I a searching for information of the death of William Baseman CUMMINS. He was born about 1824 in KY, son of John B. CUMMINS and Priscilla BASEMAN. He married Juliann ROGERS in 1842 in KY. William and family moved to Lewis County MO before 1850. Juliann must have died there because on the 1860 Lewis Co. MO Census, William was living alone and all his young children were living elsewhere. I have no record of William after 1860. Does anyone know what happen to him? Dear Cummins listers: I have just found out some more information from the 1861 British census regarding one of my Aberdeen, Scotland families. Specifically, I now know the parents' ages and POBs (CUMMINS family of Strathdon and Old Machar / REID family of Udny and Newhills ) and the names of two more of their children. I have both CUMMINS and CUMMING within the same family. I'd like to re-post this family to the list (below my signature) in the hopes of attracting descendants of the new children, or anyone who can tell me about other CUMMINS families from these localities. Cheers! Mary Jo C. Martin Melbourne, Australia JOHN S. OR L. REID was born Abt. 1820 in Udny, Aberdeen, Scotland.
