Records have John Cummins taking his small family from Westmoreland Co., PA, down the Ohio River and into Franklin Co., Indiana, in 1816. Only Cummins I have are mostly from Scotland.Although there is meantion of them being in Northern Ireland--County Down, they came from Ayr, Renfrew, Wigtown, Dumfries, and Kirkcudbright in Scotland in 1606. I know long way off on your dates but thought the town names may help. Down is directly across the North Channel of the Irish Sea just 14 miles from Ayr and Dumfries. Hi My grandmother Edith White Cummins....She married a Cummins which one I don't know yet,,I believe she was married 2 or 3 times...she was born on 1/7/1900 in Fredericktown , New Marid , Mo. to George white and Emma King White... She had my dad in 1934 or 1935 his name was Robert Lewis Smith..She applied for a ss # in 1937 under the name of Edith Ellis...She died in 1970 with the name Edith Cummins...On her death certificate its states she was a widow twice ????? Hello Listers: I am searching for ancestors and collaterals of my great grandmother EMMA JOSEPHINE CUMMINS who, in 1939, wrote on a piece of paper which somebody saved, "I was born in Lewiston, Ohio on April 28, 1869". Her name has also been seen written as JOSEPHINE EMMA CUMMINS. "Lewiston" is probably "Lewistown" in Logan County, Ohio just a stone's throw from Jackson Center, Shelby County, Ohio where the family lived for sure. Emma's mother was an ANN (ANNA) ELIZABETH YOUNG maybe born in 1850 in California. Emma had siblings: -NETTIE A. CUMMINS married WILLIAM V. MORRISON on 3 December 1885 and had children: Bonnie, Goldie and Tyra. -BERT CUMMINS married PHAEBY and had children: Beatrice and Silver. -PRIOR CUMMINS married Unknown and had a daughter (minimum). -Unknown Sister. EMMA JOSEPHINE CUMMINS married 25 December 1896 to ALEXANDER (ALIX) HIPFNER born in Baden, Ukraine, Russia on 6 January 1872. Together they homesteaded in Java, South Dakota, then to Krem, South Dakota, and finally moved up into Canada to Shaunavon, Saskatchewan. My ancestor John Sherman Cummings and his wife Alcinda (1809-1894) appear in every census from 1830 to 1870, sometimes in Caroline, Tompkins Co, NY, and sometimes in Candor, Tioga Co, NY. Their farm was probably between the two towns. In the 1865 NY State Census, John reported being born in Columbia Co, NY, and Alcinda may have been born there too. Both John and Alcinda were buried in Candor. Their children were Harriet E. (born 1830, married to Albert Hall), Emily Laura (born 1833, married to Moses Wesley Dudley), Mary (born abt 1835) and James E. (born abt 1838, wife's name was Susan). I also have some pertinent land records, cemetery records, and a copy of John's will. I am searching for the ancestors of my great grandmother, Nancy Ermaline Cummins. I think she was born in Bloomington, IN, 23 Feb 1863. She married 10 Sep 1885 in either Topeka or Minneapolis KS, Norris (Noris) Jensen (born 27 Dec 1862 in Denmark and died 18 Sep 1931 in Coos Bay, OR). Nancy and Norris had two children Ethyl (born 10 Jan 1889 in San Francisco) and Walter Ambrose Jensen, my grandfather (born 17 Mar 1894/5/6 in Marshfield (now Coos Bay) OR. Nancy and Norris divorced in 1897; she married second William Parks. Nancy died, Nov 1931 in Tacoma, WA. I think Nancy's father was Jhilson P. Cummins, born 26 Nov 1838 in Cumminsville, Bracken Co., KY and died 1918 or 1919 in Santa Rosa, CA. He married Sarah Lutz born 19 Jan 1846 in Germany and died 22 Apr 1883 in Jackson Co., IN. Jhilson and Sarah had at least seven children: Nancy Ermaline may have been the eldest; other children are Charlotte, ___nard, Eva, George, James P. and Fred. I'm trying to find where the CUMMINS, Crowder, and Moss families originally came from: CUMMINS, Henry Allen, 1856-1911, (Choctaw, or by marriage) CROWDER, Donia, (his first wife, abt. 1881) MOSS, Johnie Lela, (his second wife, abt. 1894) WEST, Cordelia, Cummins (his daughter) The information above came from Ted Byron Hall's Book, "Oklahoma Indian Territory." He lists Henry as being born in Arkansas in 1859 and as a landowner in the Whitefield, Oklahoma area about 1880. He cites Choctaw land permits from Henry to tenant farmers, but the Cummins name does not seem to be on the Dawes roll. Another source lists his birth as 1856 in Illinois, and gives his parent's name as James Cummins and Catherine Booth. Johnie Lela Moss is listed as 1877-1913, born in Arkansas. My connection is through my grandmother, Cordelia Cummins WEST, one of Henry and Johnie's daughters. In addition to the Cummins family tree, I'm studying the history of the Whitefield/Hoyt/Younger's Bend area of Haskell County, OK. I would appreciate any names, information, book referrals, web sites, or family stories about that general area in the 1880's.
