    3. Capt. Fred: Have you ever seen in your info the name Lodusky? I have a Lodusky Jane Cummins, b. MO. 1844. The census says her parents were from Ohio, but I have a strong feeling that they were from NC originally. It isd a strange name, one I thought may be a family name. She married an Adams from TN/NC. Most of the families who lived in this part of MO were from NC. Rose Adams in CA.

    3. Sandy Sorry, but I have worked mine back to Orange,NC. and am trying to tie them to either a Johnathan or William who were kicked out of Scotland and endentured in 1747. William went to Pa. while Johnathan went to Va. ( what is now NC).Johnathan' s children were Alexander, David, James,Robert, and John. Think my line is tied to Child David. I have not come across any McCrackins, but if I do in the future, ( I am far from finished) I will put you on the need to know list. Have fun hunting, someone will know!!! Capt. 3. Aice & Tricia, In the early Philadelphia city militia records there is a Jonathan and a William in the same twp and unit. Do you have any idea if Jonathan had a brother and where the brother went ? And, where did Jonathan die ? And are Johnathan and John two different men ? Also, do you know if there is a bit of family lore that says that Jonathan Sr., or someone is his family group were Jacobite prisoners sent to America ?

    3. Well, I am way slow. But I found a note from Tricia dated 17 Mar 2000. She asked who some of the people listed in the 1790 census in Lancaster Co., PA might be. I found the sale of land of John in Colerain Twp. PA, Lancaster Deeds, 3Q, p.310, FHL film #21413 14 April 1795 Between John Cummins of Colrain Twp. County of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania of the one part and Richard Mackey of the Township, County and State aforesaid.John Cummins aforesaid by the last Will & testament of Charles Olipant late of the Township aforesaid became seized of a certain messuage Tenement & Tract of Land in the Township aforesaid joining Gabriel Morrison's Land and others; and also one other small survey of 9 acres & 17 perches being likewise in the Township aforesaid. And Whereas the said John Cummins likewise became seized of one other Tract or Tenement of Land being in the Township aforesaid by certain good conveyances from the heirs of Joseph Craford.220 pounds.all the three above mentioned Tracts of Land. One tract joining Gabriel Morrison's Land.81 acres 2 quarters acre 37 perches.one other Tract.held by conveyance from the Heirs of Joseph Craford.corner of the above tract.36 acres & ½.one other Tract.9 acres 17 perches.Wit. John Baird And I claim the Widow Cummons as mine. She is wife of Jonathan Cummins Sr. He died 1769/70. The reason that I claim her is that her neighbor, Phillip Rockey, lived next to Jonathan Cummins Sr. and bought his land when he died. Thank you, Tricia, for helping me out. Sincerely, Alice Gedge

    3. My Cummins came from both Ohio and Ray county. Lodusky Jane Cummins or Cummings (on her obit in DeKalb CO) was born in Ray County MO. 1844. On the census it states her parents were from Ohio. With Lodusky for a name you would think she would be easy, but I cannot find her before her marriage in 1859 to Benjamin Franklin Adams in Ray CO. I have thier chidren and info on down but nothing before. All I have is a statement in her obit that she outlived two brothers and a sister. Rose Adams in CA.

    3. Susan, would he have "hatched" in or about Harrison or Daviess County Missouri? I sent emails out last weekend after a FerretSearch and got some replies about Missouri. What was your gg's name? I know the feeling. Mine just "appeared" in Missouri in 1814. Personally, I believe my g.g.grandfather was hatched out of an egg, in the middle of Missouri, with no one there to see it &, of course, no parents. Are you sure the name came from the plant, or is that just a case of adopting a plant with a sound-alike name? The French name for the spice cumin seems to also be cumin, and babble.altavista.com doesn't provide an English translation for Comines. S R C A cott obert ranston nderson phssra@physics.emory.edu

It depends on where the family name came from. If it is English, it probably just means "commoner". It has many variants, e.g. Cummings, Cumming, Commons, Commins, etc. If it is something other than English, then it was probably anglicized from something else to one of the English forms. If it is Irish, here is information from "The Dictionary of Irish Family Names" by Ida Grehan (Roberts Rinehart Publishers, 1997): > CUMMINS > ó Comáin ó Cuimín > Commons, Comyns, Hurley > > This surname, which is numerous in every part of Ireland, lends itself to > many interpretations. Some say that is comes from the Irish word _cam_, > meaning crooked. Others, incorrectly, think it came from the word _camán_, > a stick for playing hurling, which caused some people to anglicize their > name to Hurley! If it is French (or English descending from French), then it may come from Robert de Comyn, who came to Great Britain with the Normans in the 11th century. The family came from Comines near Belgium, and claim to descend from Charlemagne. See <http://www.ezonline.com/aem/gen/d0018/g0000045.html> for a French noble from this location. Robert de Comyn's grandson William de Comyn went to Scotland when David I reclaimed the Scottish throne in the 12th century. See http://www.epicuria.fr/comyn/ for the Scottish clan badge for the family that descends from William. Comyn appears to also be an old Scottish name that predates the Normans, see for example <http://burgoyne.com/pages/sjones/html/d0005/g0000077.html#I42622>. Presumably being Celtic, its root may be the same as the Irish above. 2. XENIA DAILY GAZETTE MONDAY EVENING - JANUARY 14, 1889 XENIA, OHIO GREENE COUNTY SUDDEN DEATH AN AGED CITIZEN LIES DOWN TO SLEEP AND NEVER WAKES AGAIN Mr. Nimrod CUMMINS, of West Main Street was found dead in his bed yesterday morning at 7 o'clock by his daughter, Susan. He had gone to bed the night before in good health, and had apparently gone to sleep very peacefully and died during the night without a struggle, as the covers had not been mussed in any way. He was lyeing on one side as if in sleep when found. Nimrod CUMMINS was born in Louden County, Virginia in 1806, and came to this state in 1846, but did not come to this county until sometime in the seventies. He lived for sometime in Cedarville Township on a farm, but until 6 months ago, he kept hotel in Bowersville. Last summer he came here to live and had become a familiar and well liked citizen about town, being socially inclined and active for one of age. He had no wife, but leaves a number of grown-up children as follows: I.T., Robert and Towney CUMMINS, Mrs. SMITH, of Bowersville, and Susan and Emma CUMMINS, who have the sincere sympathy of the community. The funeral service will be held at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday morning, Rev. A.N. SPAHR officiating. The remains will be taken to the Cemetery at Grass Run in Clinton County, 8 miles from Jamestown. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- XENIA DAILY GAZETTE WEDNESDAY EVENING - JANUARY 23, 1889 XENIA, OHIO GREENE COUNTY Nimrod CUMMINS was born in Loudon County, Va., November 8, 1806, died January 13, 1889 aged 82 years, 2 months, and 5 days, was married to Martha MCLINN September 9, 1833. To whom were born 9 children who survive them. His wife preceded him to the better land some 15 years ago. He was a member of Friends Church, was honest, industrious, kind hearted, always remembering those in adverse circumstances. He was well informed and through a long and eventful life, always seeing the bright side, and his genial disposition won him hosts of friends. His children and grandchildren have lost one who was not a burden, but a companion and friend; one who sympathized with them in their joys and sorrows, and was truely beloved by all. Through his long lonliness since his wife's death, he was never heard to murmer, although having lost one whose christian life was an example, whose companionship was sweet, and whose assistance in raising his large family was inestimable. The last few months were peaceful in an unusual degree in one so old. He was very patient, although being quite feeble. His death was very peaceful, merely went to sleep and awoke in Heaven. What a blessed awakening was that; just going to sleep on Earth in the midst of all its cares and sorrows, and awakening in the light and joy of Heaven, there to meet his dear companion and friends gone before, asleep in Jesus blessed sleep. Farewell Dear one, may thy memory linger with thy friends like sweet incense, and may all be so happy to meet thee on the shining shores of immortality. Debbie I have no connection with the CUMMINS surname. I found this article and thought it might be of interest to someone on the list. ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET!
