He was born 1863 and died 1945. They were married in Hardin County in 1888 and lived near Dola, Ohio. Mattie's relatives, called 'mountain folks' or 'hillbilly farmers' came from England as Quaker dissenters in 1665. First settling in Maryland, they later moved to Springfield and Dayton areas of Ohio. Some of them travelled through Virginia, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas to live. While visiting with relatives in Hardin County, Mattie met Harmon. Her religion was that of her kinfolk - United Brethren - but in 1897 she was confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church south of North Washington which is now Dola, Ohio. "Harmon Kahler was born in the Dola area in 1863 to Eva Elizabeth Greenawalt (1839-1932) and Henry Kahler (Heinrich Koehler) who were married in 1860 in Hardin County. Harmon Kahler was confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church of North Washington (Dola), Ohio in 1898. Harmon enjoyed community affairs serving as school board member and as township trustee. "Henry Kahler, Jr. was also born to this union but only lived to the age of 5 years (1865-1870). "Elizabeth Greenawalt Kahler came from Germany at the age of 16 in 1855. In 1891 she was a charter member of Lydia's Women's Missionary Society at St. John's Church. She spoke German fluently, sang German hymns and read her German Bible daily. "To Mattie Jackson and Harmon Kahler were born (1) Karl Kahler who married Viola Dirmeyer. Karl, now deceased, farmed in Hardin County for many years. Their children were: Miles, a contractor; Martha Kahler Myers, a secretary; Richard Kahler, a factory worker; Betty Kahler Stevenson, a township clerk. (2) William 'Willie' Kahler who married Ina Neff. William now deceased farmed in Washington Twp. his entire life. To them were born Robert Kahler (deceased), a farmer; and Isabel Kahler Baertsche, an elementary school teacher. Elizabeth Kahler Bamberg lived with Willie and family for 10 years on the farm where Elizabeth had lived her entire life. She enjoyed her garden until age 90. "Henry, a third son now deceased, worked on the railroad as stationary engineer. He married Opal Houser. "A daughter, Mary now deceased, married Milliard Harman and lived near Dayton, Ohio where she worked in paper mill for many years. Mary had two children, Lewis Harman now deceased was a factory worker, and Betty Harman Faulkner, a school secretary. "A fourth child, Edna (1908-1910) died from croup. "Mattie Jackson Kahler passed away at age 49, having spent many years in a wheel chair as an invalid suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Her philosophy of life was that she must suffer so that others might have a good life. Her questions was never 'Why Me, Lord?' but 'Why Not Me?'" The preceeding was submitted by Isabel Kahler Baertsche and appeared in a book written in the 1960s (?) titled "Hardin County Biographies."
