Another from the KELLER list. ----- From: "BBurns" <bburns@hcis.net> To: <KELLER-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, July 12, 2000 6:49 PM Subject: [Keller] Sarah Ellen Keller > Carol, > My Sarah Ellen Keller died in 1929 at the age of 65. This makes her birthday in 1864 which matches. I have Sarah on the 1900 Census for Paducah Mccracken County Ky. living on a houseboat with her 7 children and 1 boarder. Alexander, her husband, must have just recently died as the youngest child 1 year old. From my understanding they were commercial fisherman who travelled the Ohio and Missouri Rivers on a shanty boat. > I just went through some more papers while writing this and she has several different dates for her birthday. One has May 1860, one has June 1864. Several of the other family members I have on this side have conflicting birthdates. So who knows!!!!! Was her dad ever in Missouri? I hope we have a connection. I have been unable to find anything on her. > Karen Burns

They lived in Paducah, Ky around 1880's to 1920's. Alexander died before 1900 and Sarah remarried to William Lazaras Pope. All I know about Sarah is her father was born in Germany. This came from the 1900 census. Believe she was probably born around 1860 in Missouri. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, > Karen Burns

    3. Brian <mertzy@sympatico.ca> sent this answer to the KOHLER list after I forwarded Sharon's message to other K_L_R lists. The RootsWeb computers sent it directly to me because Brian's address is not subscribed to the KOHLER list. ---------------- Dear Sharon, If you know that they were all born in the same place in Denmark, it seems likely to me that Andrew Olson was Ole Mogensen Kjoller's son. Allowing for the brutal anglicizing of the names listed on the census record you quote; Andrew's date of birth and Ole's date of marriage coincide nicely, unless I have subtracted wrong. I don't know if you know this already, but prior to about 1850 in Denmark, family names as we think of them did not exist. You were given a last name based on your father's first name. Thus Andrew the son of "Ole" would be named Andrew (probably Anders before it was anglicized) Olesen (Danes spell their word for son with an "e"). This was probably anglicized to Olson. A girl would be named Olesdatter. The other name associated with a family, such as in this case Kjoller (Kjøller or Kjøler?), was a distinguishing name that was usually the name of a farm or place. So that you had "Anders Olesen Kjøler" meaning "Anders, Ole's son, from the Kjøler farm". Here is another possibility: Kjøler was interchanged with Køhler and possibly other spellings. Here is an example. This Køhler/Kjøler family is from Denmark but I'm not sure where. Descendants of Johann Michael Køhler 1 Johann Michael Køhler . +Anne Kirstine Hansdatter ...... 2 Johan Henrich Kjøler b: 1789 .......... +Mariane Pedersdatter m: 1817 d: 1822 .............. 3 Johan Peter Kjøler b: 1818 .............. 3 Johan Michael Kjøler b: 1821 ...... *2nd Wife of Johan Henrich Kjøler: .......... +Lene Johanne Hofmeyer m: 1822 .............. 3 Mariane Marie Køhler b: 1823 .............. 3 Frederik Daniel Køhler b: May 11, 1823 d: May 01, 1890 .................. +Caroline Emma Theresia Blichfeldt b: June 24, 1824 d: February 01, 1897 ...................... 4 Jutta Warinca Kjøler b: 1850 d: 1918 .......................... +Johannes Hansen Johansen b: 1828 d: 1907 ...................... 4 Petra Emilie Kjøler b: 1848 d: 1926 ...................... 4 Harald William Kjøler b: 1853 d: 1926 .......................... +Caroline Augusta Blichfeldt b: 1855 d: 1937 ...................... 4 Valdemar Peter Kjøler b: 1857 d: 1936 .......................... +Marie Petrine Jensen b: 1855 d: 1911 ...................... 4 Ernst Viggo Frederik Køhler b: 1866 d: 1907 .......................... +Dagmar Nielsen d: 1941 "My" Kohler family previously spelled the name Køhler, and immigrated from Denmark to Canada. Prior to that, the name came to Denmark from Germany, where it was recorded as Kähler, in the 1800's. But they lived in Jutland and I don't know of any relatives that I have on Bornholm. Hope this helps. Sorry if you already knew this stuff. Good luck. Brian Kohler mertzy@sympatico.ca
