    3. In a message to the list for Butler County, OH, Rhonda Woods rjw2452@hotmail.com has entered the names of the: "Victims of the 1913 Flood in Hamilton Ohio, Known Dead" that had been listed in the "Hamilton Journal News" [newspaper]. One of these entries could be of importance to someone here. It says: Mary Barbara Koehler, age 29, 20 days, drowned 20 days after her marriage to Frederich C. Koehler. Daughter of Mr & Mrs Frederich Stieg. Her husband, sister, and niece also drowned, though their bodies have not been found. Interred Greenwood Cemetery I have no further information about this item. 3. The following came in from Ladena at ladena@casstel.net. Remember to NOT reply ONLY to the list or Ladena might not receive your message. Leslie Kohler ``````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` I'm looking for Kohlers in Minnesota also. I am looking for members of my husband's family. I know his grandmother was Elizabeth Ann Kohler and she married John Noll. They had a number of children (Sorry, I don't have it in front of me), but my husband's mother was Viola Noll and she first married Peter Ludwig Johannsen. Can you see if anyone has any information on this group in Minnesota? Thank you, Ladena

    3. The piece below the ``````` line is on the GenConnect Query Board for Hardin County, OH at http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Oh/Hardin?read=35 It was posted there by Phyllis Jean Kahler Hutsell, who can be reached at hutsellrock@worldinter.net Leslie `````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````` The following is extracted from a book in the genealogical section of the Hardin County Library in Kenton, Ohio: "Martha Mae (Mattie) Jackson (1869-1918) married Harmon Kahler (Hermann Koehler). He was born 1863 and died 1945. They were married in Hardin County in 1888 and lived near Dola, Ohio. Mattie's relatives, called 'mountain folks' or 'hillbilly farmers' came from England as Quaker dissenters in 1665. First settling in Maryland, they later moved to Springfield and Dayton areas of Ohio. Some of them travelled through Virginia, Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas to live. While visiting with relatives in Hardin County, Mattie met Harmon. Her religion was that of her kinfolk - United Brethren - but in 1897 she was confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church south of North Washington which is now Dola, Ohio. "Harmon Kahler was born in the Dola area in 1863 to Eva Elizabeth Greenawalt (1839-1932) and Henry Kahler (Heinrich Koehler) who were married in 1860 in Hardin County. Harmon Kahler was confirmed in St. John's Lutheran Church of North Washington (Dola), Ohio in 1898. Harmon enjoyed community affairs serving as school board member and as township trustee. "Henry Kahler, Jr. was also born to this union but only lived to the age of 5 years (1865-1870). "Elizabeth Greenawalt Kahler came from Germany at the age of 16 in 1855. In 1891 she was a charter member of Lydia's Women's Missionary Society at St. John's Church. She spoke German fluently, sang German hymns and read her German Bible daily. "To Mattie Jackson and Harmon Kahler were born (1) Karl Kahler who married Viola Dirmeyer. Karl, now deceased, farmed in Hardin County for many years. Their children were: Miles, a contractor; Martha Kahler Myers, a secretary; Richard Kahler, a factory worker; Betty Kahler Stevenson, a township clerk. (2) William 'Willie' Kahler who married Ina Neff. William now deceased farmed in Washington Twp. his entire life. To them were born Robert Kahler (deceased), a farmer; and Isabel Kahler Baertsche, an elementary school teacher. Elizabeth Kahler Bamberg lived with Willie and family for 10 years on the farm where Elizabeth had lived her entire life. She enjoyed her garden until age 90. "Henry, a third son now deceased, worked on the railroad as stationary engineer. He married Opal Houser. "A daughter, Mary now deceased, married Milliard Harman and lived near Dayton, Ohio where she worked in paper mill for many years. Mary had two children, Lewis Harman now deceased was a factory worker, and Betty Harman Faulkner, a school secretary. "A fourth child, Edna (1908-1910) died from croup. "Mattie Jackson Kahler passed away at age 49, having spent many years in a wheel chair as an invalid suffering from rheumatoid arthritis. Her philosophy of life was that she must suffer so that others might have a good life. Her questions was never 'Why Me, Lord?' but 'Why Not Me?'" The preceeding was submitted by Isabel Kahler Baertsche and appeared in a book written in the 1960s (?) titled "Hardin County Biographies." People you might like to contact from the Hardin County Genealogical Society are the Corresponding Secretary, Anna Summerell, gsummertime@udata.com and the Query Chairman, Gene Cornell, gene@kenton.com.

I have been trying to track down info about my GGGG Grandfather Herni KA(H)LER/KEHLER.and his family in the late 1700's and early 1800's. My good fortune is that I have two family histories written by Henri's great grandson, Samuel P. Kaler. One dated 1887 the other 1899. If you care to browse the earlier one you can find it at http://www.kneller.com/WhitleyIN/ My bad fortune is that the facts he offers are uh. um.. a bit confused (and maybe embellished) in a few areas.. like who Henry married. I hope Henry had it right.:-) Also I doubt that Henri was General Nathaniel Greens #1 man as I can't find him in any of Greene's bios. Nor have I found him in any of the DAR info I can lay my hands on. But.never fear.according to Samuel.. In the 1887 manuscript "His wife Jane Hammond was a blooming Quaker lass of 18 and like her husband, an orphan. They were married at Mr. Leeden's house in Baltimore, on the evening of February 16, 1788 by Rev. Gutschalf, pastor of the First Lutheran Church of that city." And. "Within a few days after their marriage Henry set out for the interior of the country in search of a home, for he had saved a few hundred dollars, as near as we can ascertain, about five hundred dollars. He journeyed to Monheim township, York county, Pennsylvania, and purchased 68 acres of land, quite well improved and paid for it in cash $450.00 in gold, which he carried along sowed up in his nether garment." And. "His ashes sleep in the old church yard in Monheim Township. The spot, says Mr. Clark, is faintly marked by a crumbling sandstone, placed there away back in the forties, by some one, he knows not who." In the 1899 manuscript: "Gen. Greene secured him employment with a man in Baltimore named Leedon, where he worked and lived economically until 1788 when he married Catherine Frien, who was a domestic in Mr. Leedon's family. This marriage was solemnized by Rev Gutschaff and thereafter, on the advice of the officiating clergyman he wrote his name Kahler" And. "Within a few days after the marriage he went to Monheim township, York County, Pennsylvania and bout sixty-eight acres of land paying for it $240 in gold." (Hey.he got a break on the price.:-) And. "Henry Kahler is buried at St. Paul's Evangelical Church near Green Burr, about three miles from Logantown, Clinton County, Pennsylvania". Well to make a long story even longer I had been looking in York County and finding NADA. Then, while making motel reservations to take my daughter to a horse show I thought was in Hershey, I discovered that the motel was in Manhiem, Lancaster County, PA. Owww, my head hurts.too many Manhiems. I think I have learned that in SE PA there are Manhiems a bunch and the counties have been re-arranged a couple of times. If any of this makes any sense to anyone I sure would appreciate a pointer in the right direction. Sincerely, Norm Steffen

    3. Julie and All, According to his Naturalization papers, Christian was born in Saxony and was age 26 when he renounced his allegiance to the Sace (?) of Coburgh on 4 Oct 1856. He signed the document as Christian KÖHLER. My sister-in-law has personally seen documents that say he was born in Metz [Germanic Europe]. I have not seen these, but she hard-copied directly from them. She, and my husband's brother, have found other documents, relating to Christian, that show him to be from Europe. His cemetery stone reads, Christian F. KOEHLER, and shows dates of b 22 Sept 1837 and d 3 Jan 1906. This birth year does not correlate with the "age 26 in 1856" as shown on his Naturalization. Glenn Geisheimer responded to me with information about a Christian Friedrich KELLER (b 22 Sept 1826 in Herrenalb, Wuerttemberg) who was the s/o Jakob Friedrich KELLER and Maria Christiana Friederike GECKLE. I have not yet had the opportunity to study old European maps to see if I can make sense of any of this, but yes, I feel, with the group of documents we have seen, that Christian was indeed born in Germanic Europe. I am very curious, however, to know why you ask. Thanks for writing. 3. The following post came in this morning from Earlene Yates . --------- Benedict Koller Came to Charles towne, S.C. JULY, 1735. on the Billander Oliver, Samuel Merchant, Master, When the ship left Charlestowne in August 1735 to go to Phillidelphia, on the passenger was a Hans Koller , Susannah, and a Jacob. We know that Hans was a brother of Benedict, and had thought that Susannah and Jacob were the family of Hans... Can any one confirm this? Does anyone have any history on these people? Thank you for any information. Earlene
