    1. [CULLER] Wishes for your Christmas
    2. ~~Leslie~~
    3. Hello, It is Christmas time and, therefore, time to bore you with the condensed version of our year. Other than wonderful times with family and friends, the only extra fun part of my year was that one of our daughters and I went on a tour. My billfold was 'lifted' in London, and yet I still found the city fascinating. My favorite part of this trip to England, France, and Spain, however, was the ferry ride on the English channel. I have always loved being on the water and spent most of the hour and a half crossing out on the deck, in spite of the foul weather! As we grew ever distant from those beautiful white cliffs at the port of Dover, I could not help but wonder how the English civilians must have felt as they were leaving, in their private craft, during WWII, to rescue the military men from the shores of France. Our second grandchild joined the family (a whole month early) on March 30th. Our niece and her children were arriving from our homestate of MO. My husband had plans to take Mother to her dental appointment so that I could collect the 3 of them from the airport. Instead, one of our daughters headed for the airport (unbeknownst to our niece) while I stayed to help this sweet and small, but healthy, baby come safely into this world. She and our other grandaughter (born Sept '99) are the highlights of this grandmother's and granddaddy's lives! Sadly for us, one of my husband's brothers was called to be with the Lord on March 7th. Naturally we went to MO for his funeral. But, that definitely was not a fun way to get to see the other siblings. (We hope to do better in 2001.) This brother would have been 75 yrs old on the very day our 2nd grandchild was born, and we miss him so much! Then, on October 2nd, my dear mother died, only 36 hours after the birth of my sister's third grandchild. (This baby also arrived small and healthy, but a month ahead of schedule!) Mother's advanced cancer was detected, very unexpectantly, only one month before her flight Home to Heaven. We were in MO at the time, so she died right there where she had been born, in our hometown of Carrollton. My husband and I were with her until after she drew her final breath, and for that I will always be thankful. Being an 'orphan', with no living siblings, is a scary thing for me. And, frankly I do not feel that I am wise enough to be the lead generation of the family! We continue to be blissfully spoiled by having all of our young-adult children living right here in the Phoenix metro area. All were here for Thanksgiving and will be for Christmas! The only thing better would be for my sister's children and grandchildren to be as close at hand. Luckily, we get to spend time with them when we go to MO. Christmas will be difficult without Mother and my brother-in-law, but we will persevere. After all, at least we know (as a friend so wisely told me) that they are attending the ultimate birthday party for Christ. Best wishes and much love to all for this Holy Holiday season and for 2001. Leslie

But I just wanted to give you a couple of tidbits. Washingtonville is a wide spot in the road, it is known throughout the county as a speedtrap. Oakdale where Susan Culler is buried is the name of a cemetary. I wish you luck. I have spent 18 years of searching on again off again for Philip. He seems to have appeared out of thin air. 3. Sally, Thank you so much for suggesting Cumberland County, PA. I never thought to look there as I didn't know it existed! An internet connection had in his records that Jeremiah died in Tennessee. There is a Cumberland there, but no Cullers on record. Have also tried to find him in Cumberland, OH but to no avail. I do have his pension file from the National Archives. That is how I found out his admission into the asylum. I really appreciate you taking the time to respond and giving me all that information. My gg grandfather Philip Culler was born in Ohio in 1836. A grandson of his thought Philip's father was also named Philip. I did find a marriage record in Columbiana Co in 1831 for a Philip Culler and Elizabeth Stincifer, but no other records. Philip was married to Mary Faulk(1835-1923) and they lived in Columbiana Co and had seven children, William, Jennetta, Lauraan, Lafayette, Newton, Benjamin Franklin and Armina. He left Mary sometime after 1874 and went to Indiana where he married Alice Sofia Standley. They had two children,Floyd born in In and Ethel in Montana. Philip died in Idaho in the poorhouse in the 1920's. We are still waiting for Idaho to send us a death certificate. I think that maybe Jeremiah and Philip are connected. I have been searching the Pa census records for 1850 and as of yet I have not found Philip or noticed a Jeremiah anywhere. I had not searched Cumberland Co yet. Also another possibility is that many of the Columbiana Co records have been lost or damaged and maybe the pages of our Cullers are "lost". I will let you know if I come across any references to Jeremiah. Regards, Jill Elliott Hooley __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! 2. Sally Gustafson
    3. Marlene, Although it is possible that your ancestor was born in Cumberland, OH, it may be more likely that he was from Cumberland County, PA. Many of the Culler families who migrated to OH, went shortly before 1850. The 1850, Ohio census will probably show his parents as he was most likely still living with his parents at the age of 18. From the Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio Published 1886, and web published by Ancestry.com: Jeremiah Culler, enlisted on 26 October 1861, as a Private, aged 28, in the Ohio 6th Cavalry Regiment, Company L. The company mustered in on 01 November 1861, and mustered out on 07 August 1865. Jeremiah's pension was filed for in Sept. 1888, by his widow, Susan Culler. You may find additional information on his family in his pension file which is available to order from the National Archives. http://www.nara.gov There may be more information on this unit at www.usgenweb.org/oh or at one of the "Ohio in the civil war" websites. You probably already have this, but the Ohio death records show the following for Susan Culler, died 07 March 1908, Widow, 65 years, died in Washingtonville, OH. Buried Oakdale. (not sure if Oakdale is name of Cemetery or town.) I have seen the Culler family in Columbiana Ohio previously, but am unable to locate who the researcher is at the moment. Perhaps there is someone else on the list who can help. Sally Gustafson Santa Barbara, CA sallyg@west.net

They had seven children: William, George, Ida, Alonzo, Orvil, Eleanora, & John. Jeremiah was admitted to an insane asylum in 1875 in Cuyahoga County and died there 2 months after his admission. Records in Cuyahoga County show he was from CUMBERLAND. Assume this is the same city in Guernsey County, OH. I have been unsuccessful in trying to locate his grave site as well as his parents names.
