He went to Spain when very young, was educated in Madrid, entered the army as a military engineer, and took part in the war against Morocco. In 1.862 he was appointed professor in the College of military engineers. In 1864 the government sent him to Denmark to report on the war between that country and Germany and Austria. In 1865 he returned to Cuba, where he superintended the construction of several important public works. He went back to Spain in 1874, in 1879 he was elected to represent his native city in the Spanish cortes, and he has since been an active member of the Cuban Liberal home-rule party in that body. He also assisted to bring about the abolition of slavery in the Spanish West Indies. He has published "Tratado de Arquitectura"; "Estudios de Or-ganizaeiones militates extranjeras"; " Descripcion de varias plazas de guerra"; and" Empleo del hierro en las fortificaciones." The description given corresponds to Bernardo Portuondo Barceló Bernardo Antonio Elías Portuondo Barceló, was born July 20, 1840 in Santiago de Cuba. He was the son of José María de Jesús Portuondo Bravo and María Josefa Barceló Repilado. He married Francisca Loret de Mola Boza March 24, 1868 in Puerto Príncipe. She was the daughter of Luis Loret de Mola Batista and María Manuela Boza Miranda.
