    3. Dear Juán: I do not know if it's the same line, but it should be, and the last name "de la Cova" appears as part of my de la Torre/Sifontes bloodline. Undoubted;y, "de la Cova" is a very old name in the area of Puerto Principe (now Camagüey) region of Cuba. I however only have my specific line, but this might help you out some. By the way, Puerto Principe was sacked and burned by I can't remember what God forsaken pirate/corsair, and most records before that time were destroyed. The information I have is the following: Juám de la Torre y Sifontes Alferez Mayor. Alcalde Orinario, y Regidor Perpetuo de la Villa de Puerto Príncipe (Administrative and Appointed titles) Married Isabel de la Cova y Consuegra, daughter of Francisco de la Cova y Machicao & Isabel Consuegra y Muñoz (Desdendant of Hernando Consuegra, who accompanied Diego Velazquez in the conquest of Cuba in 1510, and established a "mayorazgo" in the region of Puerto Príncipe). The surname Consuegra is interwoven with the surname "de la Cerda," which are all descendants of Alfonso X (The Wise), King of Aragón, whose sons married the daughters of King Louis of France. Thus thru this name there exists a descendancy from the royal houses of Aragón and France. This marriage took place in the late 1500s or early 1600s. One of their children was named Francisco. Francisco de la Torre y Cova Regidor & Alcalde Ordinario de la Villa de Puerto Príncipe Married María Pelaez y Mexías, daughter of Francisco Pelaez (Procurador General (Attorney General) y Alcalde Ordinario de la Villa de Puerto Príncipe, and & Lorenza Mexías. The descendants of the Pelaez line include Amelia Pelaez, one of Cuba's outstanding painters. One of their children was named Tomás (became Captain Tomás de la Torre y Pelaez. I know this is not much help, but at least you will be able to clear your existing notion of the "de la Cova" surname, which should be the correct form of the surname. Sincerely: Oswaldo F. Hernández Campos Dahlonega, Georgia Note: You might want to take a look at the "de la Torre" section in the Conde de Jaruco books. "de la Torre" is usually the name by which the Puerto Príncipe's "de la Torre" are known, but they are close cousins of the "Gonzalez de la Torre" line, as the Havana "de la Torre" were known for some time, before dropping the González part of it, one of whose descendants, María Luisa de la Torre y Bassave, married Francisco de Borbón y Castellví, Duque de Borbón, in the mid-1800s. To the best of my knowledge, that's the only marriage between someone from Latin America and the Royal House of Borbón which has descendants nowadays. ----- Original Message ----- From: "juan" <jsardin1886@earthlink.net> To: <CUBA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, June 24, 2004 7:13 PM Subject: [CUBA-L] Oquendo y de La Coba > Saludos otra vez. > > Ahora leyendo sobre los antepasados de los Acostas de La Habana, encuentro a Juana Jacinta de Oquendo y de la Coba, quien aparece como hija de Matias de Oquendo y de Josefa, segun Familias Cubanas y datos en LDS. While checking Familias Cubanas and LDS for information about the ancestors of the Acosta family from Havana, I come across Juana Jacinta de Oquendo, esposa de don Felipe de Acosta. Juana Jacinta is mentioned as daughter of Matias de Oquendo and Josefa, but what was Josefa's surname? > I imagine that some members of the group, such as Nicolas de Cardenas, have already done this research but i am confused, because if i understand Familias Cubanas correctly, Josefa's surnames were Garci Ximenez de Morales Coba y Luna. > On the other hand, according to a Cuban site on this history of Medicine in the island, Matias and Josefa were also the parents of the famous Julian Recio de Oquendo y de la Coba, a well known doctor. This site mentions the book by Crowley as well as existing archives. It gives Josefa's surnames as "de la Coba" only.
