Juan ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Greetings, While looking through Familias Cubanas for information about the ancestors of the Sotolongo family, which seems to have so many present-day descendants, i came across the Davila-Mendoza surname. Has anybody from the group being able to locate the origin of this surname, if not of the family? The first person who bore this surname in Cuba appears to be one don Vicente d'Avila Mendoza (sometimes written Davila), who is said to have been Alferez of the town of Havana, back in the 1600s. According to Familias Cubanas, he married Catalina Perez-Borroto. This couple had some children, including Leonor, who married Juan Solares Sotolongo. Question: Are these Davila Mendoza related to the family of the same surname (is it a composite name?) back in Sevilla and southern Spain? People who bore that surname appear in Spanish records in the 1600s and 1700s. From what one can find online, the combination of surnames Davila y Mendoza may have originated with the eldest son of don Diego Arias Davila (the famous counsellor of King Enrique IV of Castile). This son was married to one Maria de Mendoza, a grand-daughter of the Marquis of Santillana. http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=156&letter=D Just curious Juan
