Marianao is a municipality west of Ciudad de La Habana, in La Habana province. The first settlers by the river Marianao were a group of religious priests headed by Presbitero Francisco de Zayas Bazan in 1719. The county seat was founded January 1st, 1879, and its first "mayor" was Jose Valmaña. The "barrios" in the municipality are as follows; Arroyo Arenas, Cano, Ceiba, Coco Solo, Columbia, La Lisa, Playa, Pocito, Quemados, Redencion and Wajay. The University of Villanueva, Tropicana, El Casino, Columbia, parts of Miramar are within the municipality. Its eastern boundaries are within metropolitan La Habana City. Jorge Piñon
