You might try the US Archives. My grandmother died at about the same time. Her death was reported to the US Embassy. After a certain amount of time (don't know how long) the State Dept. turns the records over to the Archives. I found the report of her death (not exactly a death certificate) at the Archives in DC, though thy might have those records in College Park, MD now.
