    2. betsy ...
    3. Mike,   I am not sure of the actual translation, but we analyze the word and think...I believe it's much a Notary Public.  I know it was Colonial times, but even then there were Officials who would do these services.  Remember Cuba was colonized by Spain.  So "de Reino" would be refering to El Reino de España.  Notario well you know what that means.  Now who in fact was a notary in those times we don't know.  Here in the US anyone can be a Notary, but in most countries (including Cuba) you have to be an Attorney or Judge to be Notary.    I was able to find the 1862 Laws of being a Notary in Spain. http://www.jurisweb.com/legislacion/civil/Ley%20del%20Notariado.htm    If you don't mind me asking why do you want to know?  Are you trying to translate a document or have you found old family papers which state those words?  If the paper you have is from 1862 and so on then these laws would apply.    I hope this helped.  If you want to discuss it further it would be no problem for me. t, 11/1/08, [email protected] <[email protected]> wrote: From: [email protected] <[email protected]> Subject: CUBA Digest, Vol 3, Issue 212 To: [email protected] Date: Saturday, November 1, 2008, 3:00 AM Today's Topics: 1. (Escribanos wrote accounts of doings, accounts of everything that happened in the Colonies, including births, deaths, promotions. grants of lands, appointments by the provincial governors, etc. They wrote their Actas (documents) in 5 copies, and these were distributed to the differente Archives. 1 to de Archives of Indies, 1 to the Vice-Roy, 1 to the Province, 1 to the "interested parties" and 1 (sometimes, remained in the book of the notary: "anotador". Notario del Reino, does not have the actual connotation of Attorney General or District Attorney, which are actually connotations within the American System of Justice. Much more different that the use in colonial times, and nothing to do with " the cuban colonial context", inasmuch as in those time Cuba was not colonizing anyone, but was instead colonized. But, I stand to be corrected. Best regards.
