My first cousin, Jorge Echevarria, is a GGGrandson of Isabel Rubio, and his Grandfather was Cesar Diaz-Gomez, your GGrandfather. The reason why Jorge's last name is Echevarria is because Cesar Diaz-Gomez's two surviving children, Aida and Gregorio Cesar (Jorge's father), were registered by Cesar Diaz-Gomez's brother-in-law, a man by the name of Ramon Echevarria, after Cesar died. Cesar Diaz-Gomez's first daughter, Julia, who was elder sister to Aida and Gregorio Cesar, was the only one of the three who received the Diaz last name, and she died of typhus early in her life. Both of Cesar's surviving children, Aida and Gregorio Cesar, migrated to Miami and died here (Gregorio Cesar, my uncle, in 1998). Gregorio Cesar was a prominent lawyer in Pinar del Rio (city) in the 1940s and 1950s, but was barred from the practice of law in the 1960s by the Revolutionary Government. Two of his children, includi! ng my cousin Jorge, preceded him as migrants to the US in the 1960s, and he finally immigrated to the US in the 1970s. His son Jorge is today a jewler in Miami.
