They did not come from Venezuela, but from Ragusa, Dalmatia. Their original name is closer to Gjurovic. In Cuba, their name was changed variously to Yurubi or Gerovich or Georovich or Guirovich. Maria de las Mercedes Yurubi y Montalvan and Maria Elena Yurubi y Montalvan were sisters. Elena married Francisco Spotorno and was the mother of Juan Bautista Spotorno, acting President of Cuba during the Ten Years' War.
