Just visited the site of the forme Colegio de la Luz in March for the first time since 1963. Much like most of Havana, it is not in the best of conditions. But, it is still a school. Good luck in your quest for the family geneology. I have started to compile information on my family's history. I was born to cuban parents in New York City in 1950. My parent separated and eventually divorced, but my mother took my brother and I to live with my grandparent in old Havana from 1956 to 1963. I'm interested in taking a look at records pertaining to my family's immigration records. We came to the US in 1967 as part of the Freedom Flights. It is somewhat confusing to me, but I believe the correct method is a FOIA request to DHS USCIS using form G-639. If someone can give me some guidance on this it would be greatly appreciated. The origins of the name Figueredo, which means fig tree, can be traced back to the Spanish inquisition when jews where given the opportunity to change their names and their religion. As far as I can determine, the name Figueredo and its Portuguese variations, originated from the west coast of Iberia, predominately Portugal and Galicia.
