Where in Havana can I look for information about the Szymorski/Szymurski family. I'm looking for the family of Martin (Marcin) and Stella (Stanislawa) Szymurski/Szymorski. Stella's maiden name was Lukaszewska and she married Martin in Philadelphia around 1910. Martin and Stella had 4 children: Joseph Martin Walter Stanislawa/Stella. Martin and his family lived in Chester at his nephew's Stanislaw Szymurski's house at 3012 W 3rd Street, before moving to Havana, Cuba where I expect went to look for work (around 1920's). From around 1923 to 1929 Stella was in Poland, but I don't know if she was with relatives or friends. Martin Jr., and Joseph returned to the USA in 1924 and went back to live with their cousin Stanislaw. By 1930 I can only find Joseph in the census for Chester, Delaware Co., PA. Unfortunately the present generations of the Szymurski family in Chester PA have no idea what happened to their cousins. Were there any Polish estabishments/churches/groups in Havana around the 1920's? Were there any censuses taken in Havana around the 1920's? Please be aware that depending on each particular case (inquiry), Spain did not conquer the Canary Islands until the end of the 1400s, and it took them (who the natives described as "Castellanos" <Castillians>) several years to do so. The ethnic/cultural group that inhabited the Islands at the arrival of the Spaniards were (or was) called "Guanches," and they were described as commonly having reddish-color hair. The Canary Islands served as the "commercial center of commerce" for the Scandinavian Vikings for more than 400 years. There is a strong possibility that the Güanches were a mix of Viking and Moroccan Ber-Ber tribes blood and culture. They were also described as being "ferocious" warriors. I am stating this so that you are aware that every single person in the Canary Islands who has a Spanish surname, will find the origin of that last name in Spain proper (please, be aware that by stating , "...every single person," I am about 99 percent correct). I’ve been able to track down my Cuban families’ origin to a town in Gran Canaria. And I wanted to get some documentation to confirm this.
