    1. Steve Morse's Ship-Lists Project
    2. Got this from another list: Subject: Steve Morse's Ship-Lists Project Several months ago I posted a message stating that Steve had a list of every ship arrival into Ellis Island, and for most of them he even had links back to the manifest pages. It was part of an ongoing project. Now I learned that Steve has just completed this project after working on it for two years. His team of over 50 volunteers went through every one of the 3700 rolls of Ellis Island microfilms from 1892 to 1924. For each arrival they found, they recorded the roll, volume, frame, date, ship-name, and ports. Now that it is complete, there exists for the first time a searchable list of every ship arrival along with links to the associated manifest pages. The list consists of a total of 84,000 ship arrivals. The searchable list can be accessed by clicking on the "Ship-Lists" link in the Ellis Island section of Steve's website at http://stevemorse.org. If you have any questions, please direct them to Steve and not to me -- his e-mail address is at the top of his website. - Diane Jacobs New York Martha Moreira Yunis _www.villatortuga.com_ (http://www.villatortuga.com/)

Surnames: Roque, Balcazar, Ledesma, Cabrera, Luzardo, Sosa, Gil Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/kRC.2ACE/5407.1.1 Message Board Post: A couple of weeks ago, I received the baptismal certificate for Maria de la Concepcion Roque Balcazar, born 12/08/1854 in Guines, which is a small town south (and slightly east) of Havana. She was the sister of Jose, my father's great grandfather. Their parents were Marcelo Roque Luzardo and Josefa Balcazar Gil. The baptismal certificate of Marcelo indicates that his father, Jose, was born in Guines, but Maria de la Concepcion's certificate says that he was born in San Jose de las Lajas, a town slightly north of Guines. The certificates state that Josefa was born in Santa Maria del Rosario, a town in the province of Havana. Oral history, not yet proven, is that the Roque family came to Cuba from Canarias. I have other certificates for the line of Maria de la Concepcion's brother. BTW, the grandparents of Maria de la Concepcion were as follows: paternal: Jose Roque and Dominga Luzardo. maternal: Miguel Balcazar and Maria de los Angeles Gil. The baptismal certificates do not include their places of birth. I have been working with someone who is helping in the Canary Islands with other related lines. Jose Roque Balcazar married Encarnacion Cabrera Sosa, who was from Guara (also near Guines). Encarnacion's parents, Antonio Cabrera Arencibia (born about 1807) and Casimira Sosa Molina (born about 1821), were from Gran Canaria. I have an expediente de matrimonio for them which contains a great deal of information. The person in Canarias has told me that she has found a couple of certificates for these lines. Hope that the Concepcion Roque in your ex-husband's side of the family tree and my Maria de la Concepcion Roque are one and the same. Please let me know. I am eager to hear from you. Naturally, I am more than willing to share the information I have. Carmen

He says that his father, together with General Gerardo Machado (who fought in the Ejercito Mambí), bought the sugar mill known as Central Carmita, which is located in Kilometer 16 on the highway between Santa Clara and Camajüaní (north of Santa Clara). He says that this sugar mill used to belong to the Lopez-Silvero family, and that it was named after Carmita Lopez-Silvero. This is a message I sent to Emma. I'm sending it to you too just in case these names ring a bell to you. Here's the message: "Emma I hope you can give me some insight. My grandmother's name was Sofia Laffigne. She died back in the 80s around the age of 97. She said that her father was black and his last name was Laffigne. The only Laffigne that I can find in Mayaguez was a Turull Laffigne from New Orleans. I wonder if there is any relationship. Also he was married to a white Dutch woman. My grandmother cannot remember anything else since her parents died when she was young. She was from the Mayaguez area and had I believe two other sisters who sorta shunned her because she looked black and they were mulato with blond hair. Does any of this sound familiar? I find it a strange coincidence that her name would be Sofia also. I understand there is a Sofia in your family line. Maybe she was named after someone? Please response as soon! as you can. The Laffigne name is indeed very, very rare."
