    3. This is taken form the book "Antonio Maceo, The Bronze Titan of Cuba's Struggle for Independence" by Philip S., Forner. Jose Antonio Maceo was the son of Marcos Maceo and Mariana Grajales. Marcos Maceo was born in Venezuela to Clara Maceo. He had a brother, Doroteo and two sisters, Barbara and Maria del Rosario. They left Venezuela in 1825 and migrated to Santo Domingo when Venezuela achieved independence. That island was in upheaval too, so they went to Cuba. This family was free blanks. In 1843 Marcos ands Mariana Grajales joined in common law marriage, which was legitimatized in 1851. They had nine children, the first one being Jose Antonio. In 1866 Antonio Maceo married Maria Magdalena Cabrales y Fernnadez, I hope this helps. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kRC.2ACE/5509.1 Message Board Post: Dear Dawn, You should start by finding as much as you can about your Alfonso who recently died. His death certificate, if he died in the U.S., should have his parents' names and place of birth. Did he leave Cuba to come to the US? In genealogy, always start with the person nearest you and work back: death certificates, marriage certificates, birth, etc. Then the same for his parents. Ask any and all relatives what they know. Much of it may be mistaken, but it's all a clue. It's like a treasure hunt, because when you find that first piece of information you'll be so excited! I have a lot of Alfonsos in my Cuban line, going back to Spain. Good luck and don't give up! It's worth it! Spanish and Cuban records are marvelous, especially because the mother's name is incorporated into the surname (Martinez(father) y Rodriguez (mother). Once you get back a couple of generations you'll have to get acquainted with "Historia de Familias Cubanas", 9 volumes of family histories. Available through LDS Family History Centers on microfilm. You don't have to be Mormon. Well, that should get you started. If I can help, let me know. Ruth in FL

    3. Dear Dan-O I know that the actor Cesar Romero, whom you have mentioned as a grandson, had a brother named Eduardo, who was always very proud of the fact that Jose Martí was his grandfather. In fact, Eduardo named one of his daughters Marti. Ruth in FL

    1. Re: [CUBA-L] alfonso,
    2. Dawn; I would suggest that you begin your search closer to home and begin with the birth certificate of the decease which should indicate parents and places of birth and work your way back. "...looking for all the Alfonso that lived in Cuba and Spain..." is not going to be an easy task. Spain's Telefonica shows 11,163 Alfonsos in Spain, Cubatel shows over 1,175 listings all over the Island, La Habana's 1958 telephone directory shows approximately 200 Alfonsos listed, and over 200 listed in Florida on Yahoo's people search. Good luck, but your best bet is to interview as many close family members as possible. Jorge

    1. Re: [CUBA-L] Marti Genealogy
    2. Teresa, Your posting has prompted me to seek out the genealogy of Jose Julian Marti from the Internet, and present it in a convenient to view format. There are several good websites concerning his family, seemingly reputable and well-researched, but I can't vouch for the accuracy. Most sites seem to agree with this info. I've included source notations also. This can now be viewed at: http://www.gencircles.com/users/dannyperez/4/data/1 I've also included info on his alleged daughter Maria Mantilla; the mother of Cesar Romero the actor. I don't confirm or deny this, only presenting what I've found in some biographical notes. I only learned of this today while gathering Jose Marti's genealogy. As for the church of Jose Marti's baptism, you can see some recent photos of it at: http://www.cubafotos.net/cubafotos5.htm http://www.faithfuldeliveries.com/cubapics6.htm (This page also shows the house in which he was born.) None of the web pages I've seen so far mention any genealogical relationship between Antonio Maceo and Jose Marti. Could be maybe because nobody has undertaken to look for one? Photos of the Marti-Maceo Society of Ybor City, Tampa, FL can be found at: http://www.tampapix.com/ybor.htm Dan-O

    1. Re: [CUBA-L] Marti- Maceo
    2. God bless you too Diane!!! I got Jose Julian Marti birth certificate in the mail today! (God works in misterious ways). He is not my ancestor, but it was in the same church index as my ancestor was. Volume 28, Folio 61, Number 159. Jose Julian Marti was baptized on February 12, 1853, in the Santo Angel Custodio Catholic Church in Havana, Cuba, he was born on a Monday, January 28, 1853, son of Don Mariano Marti (he was a Sargeant) from Valencia Spain, and Dña. Leonor Perez native of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Island, His paternal grandparents were Don Vicente Marti and Dña. Manuela Navarro; maternal grandparents Don Antonio Perez and Dña. Rita Cabrera. God parents Don Jose Maria Vazquez and Dña. Marcelina Aguirre. So if you have Maceo's ancestors maybe you can see if they had an ancestor in common. Could it be the Cabrera line? Best regards, Teresa

    2. Bless you! I am looking for info on anyone related to either Amelia Marti or her brother Jose Marti from Cuba. Cesar's Romero's mother was a Marti and I believe the Marti's are related to General Antonio De La Caridad Maceo of Cuba. I am trying to find a connection between the Marti's and the Maceo's.Cesar Romero was quoted as saying that General Maceo was his great uncle. If anyone knows or has any info on how they were related, I would appreciate it if you would get in contact with me concerning this.In HIS name, Diane
