    2. Ellis Island records show some promising Lima's traveling from La Habana to NY... 1- Alfredo Lima arrived on 1915 at the aged of 36 (b1879), 2- Alfredo Lima arriving in 1923 at the age of 26 (b1897) and 3- Jorge Lima also arriving in 1923 at the age of 20 (b1903). There is also a Julio Lima arriving in NY in 1917 at the age of 21 (b1896) but it does not show the port of departure. Other Lima's are shown arriving from Cuba in the early 1900's but no Georgina, Sarah, or Roberto are shown. Good Luck. Jorge

    1. Re: [CUBA-L] LIMA TARDIFF/ ROVIRA
    2. In the 1903 Directorio de la Republica de Cuba, he is shown in two different sections as vicepresident of the Provincial Concil of La Habana and in both instanceshis maternal last name is spelled with a "C". In the Cubagenweb's list of officers and soldiers of the war of independence both Alfredo and his brother Juan are shown with their maternal last name with a "T". So maybe the Directory spelling is a typo. The etymology of the last name Tardiff is Tardan, latin tardare. Italian; Tardone, French; Tard, Tardy, Tardif, Tardiff, Tardieu, Tardan, German; Spat, Spaht, Speet. Posada is a 70's-80's Social directory of Cubans living outside of Cuba, post Castro. That is why I say that it is very important to find out who did your grandparent's siblings married. The social security data base shows a Julio Lima who was born in december 1902 and died in Europe in 1978, his ss card was applied for in NJ. There is also a Jorge Lima who was born in July 1913 and died in 1993 in Boydton, Va. his ss card was issued in NY. There was a Jorge Lima born in 1922 who died in Miami in 2001 and a Georgina Lina born in 1922 and died in Mass. in 1987.The 1958 Telephone directory of La Habana shows various Lima's.

    3. Jorge, Thank you for your replies. I am not positive that the name was Tardiff. My grandfather had done a family tree (without dates) and Tardiff is how he wrote it. What is your source? Could Cardiff be a typo? You also mentioned Posada's. I am not familiar with that. I looked it up on the cubagenweb page. What information will it give me? Thanks again Debra ----- Original Message ----- From: <Jrpinon47@aol.com> To: <CUBA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, October 17, 2004 12:25 PM Subject: Re: [CUBA-L] LIMA TARDIFF/ ROVIRA > Debra; are you sure that your ancestor's maternal surname is Tardiff, and > not > Cardiff? 1. Re: [CUBA-L] Re: Searching for family roots in France
    2. Daniel, bless you! I have French ancestors that came from either Spain or France to Cuba and I am wondering if they might be in the book that you mentioned. My understanding was that they recieved a land grant from Spain to start some plantations, either tobacco, sugar cane or both. Do you think they possibly might be mentioned in the book? Would you know the author of the book and where I could possibly obtain a copy? The Family surname I have been researching is "ROUDEZ". It is a French name and by researching I have found that many of the "ROUDEZ" came from the Pyrenee mountain range which separates France from Spain. It is a great possibility that some "ROUDEZ" could have lived on either side of the Pyrenees ( France or Spain ) before coming to Cuba. I do understand that the name ( ROUDEZ) might have had many different spellings before the one we have now. I would appreciate any and all info concerning the book;" French people in the Southestern of Cuba." I look forward to hearing from you.Sincerely, Diane

    2. The key is identifying the spouses of your grandfather's brothers and sisters, in order to locate the next (your father's cousins) generation. Posada's Directory of Cuban Families has the Lima Ondarce's, Lima Roque's, and the Lima Ruiz's families listed as living in the US. It also shows the Rovira Bertran and Rovira Moreno families. Good Luck, Jorge
