I also have an English-Scottish-Cuban connection. My maternal great great grandfather was Robert Waugh (b1831 Whickham, Durham, England), he was married to Alice McNicol (b1828 Kilbarchan, Renfrew, Scotland). Their families immigrated (1842) to, and married (1852) in New Orleans, Louisiana. Robert was an engineer and built, installed, and managed sugar cane mills in the Caribbean, but mostly in Cuba. He died in Cuba in 1877 as result of "crossfire" between Cuban rebels and Spanish troops as they were defending the sugar mill El Porvernir, outside of the town of Colon, in Matanzas province. Two of his daughters remained in Cuba and married Spaniards (our Cuban branch). Alice died, and is buried at the Valance Street Cemetery in New Orleans. Nineteenth century Spanish census of Cuba that I have reviewed show, after Americans, a large number of English and Scottish residents. Remember that the Cuban railroads during he second of the century were managed and owned by the Brits. Have you checked the Archives of the Foreign Office in London, to see if the death of your Mr. Buick was registered at the local British Consulate? Cuban records would not be easy to research. Good Luck. Jorge Pinon.
My maternal step-grandfather is Jorge. Most of the family is in Miami now. Barbara

I got this address off a ship's log, my ggrandmother married a Cuban who dealt in Cigars, the family frequently sailed from Cuba to New York during the early 1910 and 1920's and this address was on the manifest. I could have misspelled because the notation read, ManZana, but there was another letter over the Z and I am assuming it was an Z. Again thank you for your reply. ann

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/kRC.2ACE/5593 Message Board Post: My gt. grandfather`s brother, Alexander, born in Scotland, died in Havana (according to an addition to his parents` gravestone) on 17th September 1861. All I know about him, apart from his wife and children`s names, which are not relevant in this case, is that he was a Ships Master (presumably a Scottish or English ship, but whether Royal Navy or Merchant Navy I am unaware, as I also do not know the name of the ship or ships he sailed on). I have always had the, possibly mistaken, impression that his death may have been due to a shipwreck, but since starting on this offshoot to my family tree I realise that this may not be the case. I would be pleased if anyone could shed some light on this for me, or possibly point me in another direction to try. In particular I would like to find out what actually caused his death and where he was buried - I assume in Havana somewhere. Many thanks Gwenda

My father Eloy Fiandor was born in 1941 and raised in Habana. Son of Teodosina and Eloy Fiandor. We have now settled in British Columbia, Canada since 1987. There could certainly be some relation as we haven't come across any Fiandors so far that haven't in fact been family. My father does have some family in New York, Zenaida Fiandor, his great aunt who's now passed. If any of this information sounds familiar please feel free to contact me if you'd like.

There were several brothers who ended up living all over the island. They returned to Italy during the Spanish-American war, and then came back to Cuba when the war ended. I think there were 6 brothers who all had children, too. That's some of the background I picked up from my father. He also tells me he thinks your paternal grandmother was his aunt. Was she married to a Juan Gutierrez? hope this helps.
