It is me again, remember most of these people left Pinar del Rio as children. Only some of the Diaz family lived in "Punta de la Sierra". your grandmother might remember. They had large plantations of tobacco. Some names Severino Diaz and Prudencia Diaz M Zayas
Hi my mother was also born in Guane in 1911. She already passed away, but I went several tines to Pinar in the late 1950's. We are linked to the Fajardo family and the Diaz family. Most of the Fajardo's passed away. The last one that I know Enrique Fajardo who lived in Chicago for many years. He was a nurse for many years, before Castro in Santiago de Cuba also her sister Zoraida Fajardo. I really do not know how to contact any of these persons if there is anyone living. These people if living are in their 80s. About the Diaz family which I am also related but very distant, there are many of them in Hialeah, Florida I do not know their adress but you can do some research under Maria Diaz, also an elderly person. I can not remember her daughters names. If I remember anything else I will write again. M Zayas

I am interesting in the Ruiz family from las Villas. Specially descendants of Carlos Ruiz, (b. circa 1802), his complete last name was "Ruiz del Canto and Pons". Some times appears as Carlos Canto. Also any person who descend from the "Andreu and Ruiz del Canto (or (Ruiz)" family from las Villas, Cuba. Thank you, Teresa

His father was Demetrio Castellanos, we believe also from Camaguey & his mom was Nieves Ruiz, from Las Villas. His parents were never married, his father was never part of his life. It's diffucult to get information, my grandfather had a hard life and doesn't want to talk about it. My grandmother tells me Demetrio's mother's name was Maria Castellanos, also never married, so Demetrio carries his mother's maiden name. Demetrio also had a sister name Crucita Castellanos. I have no paper confirmation of any of this. If any of the names sound familiar let me know. Lissa
Dear Miguel, I read your e-mail to my grandmother. Unfortunately she does not recall any of the names you gave me. It just happens that she did remember the full name of her mother's doctor, it was Dr. Antonio Maria Rubio. My grandmother wishes to thank you for your kind courtesy of your message. Unfortunately I have never been to Guane and I have no direct relatives there. For unknown reasons to me, my greatgrandparents left Guane with all their children, including my grandfather around the 1920's, more or less. Dr. Rubio was my grandparents' family doctor and also Godfather to my grandfather, the eldest of 5 of my greatgrandparents' children. I read in my findings that Dr. Antonio Matias Rubio lost this first wife, Prudencia Diaz (mother to the heroine Isabel Rubio Diaz and three other children) and married a second time Feliciana Linares, who was an aunt to my great grandmother and Godmother to my grandfather. My great grandparents were Candido Gonzalez Arango born in Asturias, Spain and Paula Odelinda Linares Gomez de Villegas, born in Guane, whose children were: 1 - Pedro Manuel Gonzalez Linares, born in Guane in 1905 (my grandfather) 2 - Carmelo Gonzalez Linares, born in 1907, 3 - Candida Gonzalez Linares, born in 1910, 4 - Rosa Elvira Gonzalez Linares, born in 1912/1913 and 5 - Francisco Israel Gonzalez Linares, born in 1915. I´d be very grateful if you could read these names to your grandmother in case they mean anything to her. Similarly, if you happen to have a family tree perhaps you could check wether any of these names appear in it. Thank you in advance for taking the time to read this and for any light you may shed on my findings. Best regards from Madrid.

Good Morning, I have recently aquired a marriage certificate of a Diego Valenzuela (hijo de Juan) amrried with Andrea Castellanos Hernandez (hija de Juan y Maria) maaied in 1827 and I beleve that it says they are from Camaguey or (Canaria) the ink went through the pages on the original book so the copies are a mess! It's 12 pages so I believe it might be a little more than just a marriage certificate. I'll be briniging it on Saturday to the meeting at FIU and hopefully someone can help me figure this out :-) If any of these names sound familiar, please let me know. Gracias, Annette Dear Mr. Castellanos: Are you related to the Castellanos of Camag|ey (Federico, etc.)? Respoectfully; Oswaldo Hernandez Campos Asheville, North Carolina Rene Castellanos <rene.castellanos2@gte.net> wrote:Very interesting, and it makes sense that the Y-DNA markers of your oldest known direct paternal ancestor from Galicia would show a strong relationship to the markers of the population inhabiting the British Isles, since the origin of this population migrated to the isles from the continental terra firme of Europe, and there are findings in scholarly works in physical anthropology on DNA studies done in the last few years that indicate a provenance for the Irish people in the early populations of northern Spain -- Celtic (Celtiberians), so nothing new here. Current anthtropologic data still postulate that modern man has its origin in continental Africa based on fosil record, and this origin can be trace through the mitochondrial DNA on the maternal line, and subsequent markers on the X-chromosome can indicate a migration pattern with subsequent major groupings with similar markers...hmmmmmm! Very general information, but interesting. Remember that Spain is a cul-de-sac, and population migrate due to different factors such as population pressures, wars and raids by "barbarians", famine, plagues, etc., and so the population of Spain changed constantly from the influx of migrating people moving westward until reaching the sea, then following the coast, southward sometimes crossing over to northern Africa, and other times crossing over to the isles to the north as sea farers -- and don't forget the constant raids by nordic seafaring tribes that flogged the coasts of ancient Spain...so the DNA study has confirmed what you already knew of your family provenance, ie. Celtiberic and not Visigothic...so far, it will be interesting to see what other group the other markers will point to. I too will like to partake in this study and contribute to the project, as I find it fascinating! Thank you Martha for sharing with us your family DNA findings, as it is always interesting to see how new technologies have a way of bringing to light more information to enrich our historical past -- looking forward to hear about your new findings in this area when you get them and if you wish to share again; as an anthropologist by academic formation, this study is of great interest to me. I am still reeling with the results of the Y-DNA 12 markers (male lineage-the DNA sent was my brother's so we could get the most comprehensive information). "Be careful what you wish for" has always been my favorite dicho. It seems by Haplogroup and 12 marker match (we are waiting for the 24 and 37 marker tests to be ready, as well as the maternal DNA sample) that my paternal clan originated in the British Isles. We also have a 100% match to 4 individuals in the database, all of whom live in England. Now we proceed to try and "empatar" who the sailor was that went over to Spain and couldn't keep his britches on. :), as my own documentation shows my earliest known paternal ancestor to be from Lugo, Galicia. I may have to leave this list and go over to the Brits! Must get back to my tea and crumpets, but wanted to share this info with the group, so you can get an idea of how the service works (to make you crazier!). God save the queen!
