    3. Caballero is a very common name. It appears in my family, but the chances that mine and those you are researching are connected are remote. However, in the off chance that they are, my Caballero comes from a Juan Caballero who moved to Pinar del Rio in the 1870s, from Haute-Garonne, France. His parents were Spaniards, probably Carlist emigres. regards, Mike Gonzalez "by way of Ed Elizondo <ed@elizondo.org>" <dyancey@miami.edu> wrote:This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Her name was Josefa Diaz- Cruz. She married Miguel Gil de Rubio. She was a descendant of Pepe Diaz-Cruz who fought the English in Puerto Rico. He was mortally wounded, having had the top of his head blown off. He was such a fierce fighter that he put a coconut shell on his head as a helmet and fought until he dropped dead. For this the king of Spain awarded him Barrio Annones in Naranjito, Puerto Rico. In the event that you have any information on the Diaz-Cruz family; please let me know. Oh yes Josefa's mother was named Cristina. Thanks so much Janine Clark

He immigrated to the United States around 1915. I believe he was born in Pozo de la Sal, Burgos, Spain. I don't really know anything about his family yet. I believe he had a relative (uncle) in California at the same time he lived in California. The uncles name was Jose Arriaga Alonso. It is also possible that Felix was born in Portugal. We really just do not know. Felix was born on December 4, 1889. It is possible that his father's name (in Spain or Portugal) was Francisco Alonso or Mateo Alonso. I think Felix's mothers name was Scholastica Castillo. Any help would be so great! Thanks.

    3. Because I was married to a Texan Gordon for 27 years, and my daughter is thus one, I've been interested in researching this matter for a long time. I was first surprised when I discovered the Gordons in Spain even before the country existed. Apparently, one or more knights named Gordon moved to Spain at a very early stage of the Christian Reconquest of the peninsula (perhaps around the year 1000). Throughout the history of Spain the surname Gordon has been highly regarded, being part of the highest levels of Spanish society. I can't remember exactly where, but possibly in the Province of Leon, in northern Spain, there is a small town named Pola de Gordon. Nowadays the Spanish Gordon surname is accentuated on the last syllable, being thus written Gordn. The Gordons also appear in Cuban society and history. They appear marrying into the "Havana branch of the Gonzlez de la Torre or de la Torre family." Until now, I have been unable to find the origin of an individual who was known as Colonel Gordon, and who was a member of Cuban War of Independence (and Ten Year War) hero, General Antonio Maceo's immediate staff. In basically the two main wars of independence (the two mentioned), many Confederate officers and soldiers fought on the side of the Cubans, although some did fight on the side of Spain. What is more, I understand that the Cuban cavalry tactics were almost equal to the Confederate cavalry tactics. Under the "Gonzalez de la Torre" heading, in the books titled Li bro de Familias Cubanas, of the Conde de Jaruco, which you can find in several Miami libraries, you will find the Gordon reference.
