    2. The "expedientes" of Spanish soldiers in Cuba during the XIX colonial period are in the Archivo Historico Militar de Segovia. In my experience they have been very helpful in my searches and for a nominal fee they will copy and mail you the individual's military file. Address and telephone will be found in Cubagenweb.org. 3. If I recall correctly, when I first started trying to obtain some information about one of my great-grandfathers, Domingo Campos Prez, who had been a lieutenant colonel who was sent to Cuba during the Ten Year War (1868 - 1878), I did not find his name in a book/list which is at the Richter Library's Cuban/Spanish Section of the University of Miami. This list has thousands of names. I believe that it was titled something regarding the Ejrcito de las Amricas. However, I did obtain his military file (which of course included some biographical information) from the Archivo Histrico Militar in Segovio. He had been born in northeastern Galicia (can't remember the name of the small town right now). When he retired from the Spanish Army, after that war, he was named Alcalde (mayor) of Palmira, where I understand that he is buried. It was in that region that he had fought during the war. His first wife had died, and he married my great-grandmother, Elvira Martnez Cla! velo, who was from that area. His oldest son, Manuel (being of course more Spanish than Cuban) moved back to Spain after Cuba became a republic. I wish that I could contact that branch of the family. Oswaldo F. 3. Bonjour, I am researching the descendants of a French resident in the Caribbean, Jose(ph) Honore BEAUPIED (1826-1902), living in Guadeloupe (ca 1840) and in Porto-Rico (Mayaguez) about 1875. He returned in France but possibly let some descendants in Porto Rico or Cuba, La Habana. An hypothesis is that some of them have left Cuba to the US in 1904 : a son, Jose (b. about 1866) and a grand-son b. about 1880, Alberto (occupation : carpenter). If there is a family BEAUPIED in Cuba or descendants in US, I would need an evidence of their relationship to this person. Please contact me if you are a descendant or if you may know some possible descendants. 1. Gottardi name

    3. Greetings from Australia. I am a new subscriber and hoping for information on the surname Gottardi. Fedele Ludovico Gottardi and Filomena Gottardi went to Cuba from Ticino, Switzerland in the early 1870s. They were Swiss Italian. I have also seen the name written as de Gottardi. They had at least two children, Romoaldo Ludovico Gottardi born 1871 in Ticino and a daughter born after arrival in Cuba. I do not know where in Cuba they lived. I would be very grateful for information on how I could find out more about this family. I would also like to know whether the Gottardi / de Gottardi name still appears in Cuban telephone directory today. I apologise but I do not speak Spanish. Many thanks Sue

    2. The 1958 white pages telephone book for La Habana does not list a William Cairns or Patricia Salas, nor does the 1960 Anglo American Directory for La Habana. The main cemetery in La Habana is Cementerio de Colon. Directorio de Familias Cubanas does not list any Cairns/Salas in their post Castro US directory. Did Patricia ever become a US citizen? Did Patricia have any survivor's rights to a US pension or retirement system that William belonged to? Did they have any children? Do you have their, and spouses last names? If Patricia was a US citizen you might want to check the National Archives in College Park Maryland, the records for the US embassy in La Habana are stored there. Jorge Piñón
