Do you have these ancestors' names? If so, you may be able to search the Spanish Archives on the Web (Archivos Españoles en el web). They can be reached at http://aer.mcu.es/sgae/ To use this resource you first have to register as an investigator. You can do this on-line by clicking on the link "Alta de Usuario". You have to provide them with a passport or other "National ID" number. Once you are registered you can enter the person's name in the main text box and do a search to see what you find. You can also select "Advanced Search" to narrow your search to a particular period of years. In most cases you just find a title of the document where the name appears. If you are lucky you may find a transcription. In some cases there is a reference to a microfilm number which I assume you must research at the particular archive (there are no instructions on this). If you are REALLY lucky you may find images of the actual document on line (indicated by a camera icon). If you find a reference you will probably have to write the particular archive to see if you can order a copy of the document and how much they will charge you. I assume you understand Spanish or can get someone who does, since the Spanish Archives are only in that language. Dear Ed, I forgot to mention that my ancestors came from either Spain or France and from this land grant started a sugar cane or a tobacco plantation or possibly both in Cuba.Sorry I overlooked this vital information. Thank you.Diane

Cubans are not obsessed this way but it seems to me that Americans of a certain political pursuasion want to divide us by pointing to the predominantly "white" Cuban exiles of the 1960s vs. the much moree diverse lot that followed. Enough is enough. Barbara Monzon-Puleo
Dear Ed, could you tell me if you know how I could find an ancestor's name who, according to other members of my family, was given a land grant from the King of Spain, possibly 100-150 years ago? I also had a female ancestor, who was a Lady-In -Waiting to the Queen of Spain, possibly 100-200 years ago. What could I do to get to get this information? I would appreciate any and all help on these two requests.Thank you,Diane

I believe that since the U.S. became a Nation, traditionally, there has existed a very strong but subtle bias against Spaniards and Cubans in general, in the educational systems of the Nation, but particularly in the most influential levels of the American news media. The fact is that historical facts and events have been projected in a manner which projects in a very negative manner the actions of the Spanish "bloody conquistadores" vs. that of the English "settlers," which even shared a meal with the New England natives. Have you ever heard of the murder, also in New England, of 200 Indian chieftains with poisoned wine. Have you heard of the betrayal and murder of Chief Metacomet, in New England, and of Oscelo, in Florida? While for example portraying the "disappearance" of the members of the original Florida natives (the Appalachees, the Tequesta, the Calusa, the Freshwater Creek Indians, and the Ais) as a result of their contact with the Spaniards, what the facts demonstrate is that it was in the Carolinas, and probably in one specific mid-West campaign where native Americans were given articles contaminated with snallpox, in order to decimate their populations. There is also ample evidence that proves that many members of these tribes, who were still alive, emigrated with the Spaniards to Cuba in 1763, when Florida and Havana and its surroundings were exchanged between the Spanish and the British governments. I will take any opportunity given to me to to be able to correct erroneous historical data and notions, and this has been taking place for too many, but too many years. It is my intention to allow Anglo-Americans and other Americans to view and interpret the "new" evidence being made available, so that we can exist in a more favorable and friendly scenario. Please, understand that Minnesota is not Florida, of course. Oswaldo F. In the Telefonica (Spain) white pages there are only five Tapanes listed. Been so few I would suggest writing them a letter and see if they have information on the surname. Correos does not show a locality in Spain by that name, so there is a high probability that it is not a toponimic surname of Spanish origin. Maybe your information of possible Arab roots might be correct. Good luck. Jorge Piñón
There is no reference of the Tapanes surname in the Diccionario etimolgico comparado de los apellidos espaoles, hispanoamericanos y Filipinos by Gutierre Tibn This book contains surnames and variations of the surname. Dear Ed Elizondo While searching for the last name Alvarez, I noticed that this surname appears on the list starting both with the English letter A and with the Spanish version Á. I'd just like to point out that the system would not accept a search with the Spanish version Á in the search box atop the column. It therefore does not list the surnames staring with the Spanish version if you use the English version in the search box.. As a test, I attempted to perform another search with other Spanish characters and found that the system would not accept them in the search box atop the column. I think it would be a good idea to only post the surnames beginning only with English letters and correct any that begin with the Spanish version. Perhaps you could pass this along to the persons transcribing the names onto the list along with my deepest appreciation for what they are doing. Thank You Sincerely Andres Echazabal ( Descendent of Luis Areces Gonzalez from Llamero, Candamo, Asturias who emigrated to Cuba sometime between 1860-1868. I'll be looking out for him.)
Andres, You are absolutely correct. I thought I had eliminated all accents from surnames but apparently some slipped through. I will fix the data to eliminate all accented characters (this is what I say in the instructions). Thanks for pointing it out to me.
