My father name is Jose (Joe) Orta and his mother is Berta Orta and father Ricardo Orta. I believe that both my grandmother (Berta) was born in Cuba and unfortunately don't have to much information regarding my grandfather Ricardo, other than the fact he was previously married. I do know that they came over to the United States around 1957-1959. I believe that Berta Orta parents were from the Canary's. If you have any information that could assist me in gaining more information about my family heritage it would be appreciated if you could reply to this post. If you check the actual document it definitely says Cuba. Maybe Robert was the only one who remember that his mother was born there? It seems unlikely that he would make information like that up, or that he would not remember that she was in fact born in Bermuda. He gets everything else right on the census... I've hit a big dead end with Mary Ann Vaughan, so I welcome a new place to search for her. I have also heard older family members, now deceased, claim that she was of mixed race. One of John Barritt's brothers who emigrated to Boston (I have to check which one)and his census entry (I think his last - he was 70 years old) says father born in Bermuda, mother born in Cuba!!! I'll did it up and send you the link/more info. Best, Erin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Mary J V was my g3 grandmother, but I had her listed as being born in Bermuda, 4 Feb 1823, according to Hallett, 19th Century Church Registers of Bermuda. The Cuba connection you mention is intriguing, could you please provide more details? His trip in 1847 to Baltimore was probably to take silk samples to market in the US, as detailed in a book I have about the history of Hamilton, Bda. I found the birth records of Sylvia Esperanza d'Estrampes. She was born on June 23, 1872. Her father was Dr. Louis A. d'Estrampes and her mother is listed as Adelaide Martina Vegn, who I assume is Adeliada Martin-Vegue born around 1840 in Cuba. Here's a link to her birth record in the US Archives: http://files.usgwarchives.org/la/orleans/vitals/births/index/1872bidg.txt I also have been spending quite a bit of time reading and translating from Cuban history books any information I can find on Francisco Gomez y Estrampes of Matenzas. I even found a picture of him. I'm keeping all my information on him in his profile in my family tree here: http://trees.ancestry.com/pt/person.aspx?tid=5266915&pid=-1035456089 Please check back often - I'm only half done translating and have much more information to enter. Dear List, If you are new to our site, we hope you will check out our census page, military books, and directories. The Census page include the complete 1790 US Heads of Families Census, the 1840 Pensioner's Census, and several Native Indian Rolls from the turn of the 20th century: http://census.evendon.com The military books are at: http://military.evendon.com This week we have added the following books to our directory page: http://directory.evendon.com 1788-1890 Gazetteer - Genesee County, NY - This book includes a reference map 1881 Gazetteer - Maine 1890 Gazetteer - Massachusetts 1914 Police Pension Records - New York City Pittsburgh Directories: 1867, 1899, 1901, 1902, 1903, 1905, 1907, 1908, 1910, 1912, 1914 Many of our Pittsburgh Directories and other local materials come from the University of Pittsburgh Digital Research Library. We have been able to dramatically improve the searchable indices for more than 50 of these including the 10 directories we've just added, most of the 19th Century Pittsburgh directories, the 1930 directory, the Homestead directories, and many of the books on our "SmallBooks" page. In particular, the directory indices are now accurate enough to make a search on a specific street address worthwhile. We hope you find the material on our site useful and return often. I want to search Native American Records, esp, ones in Cuba. They'll even tell you the correct spellings and actual dates. Because of the genocide that was going on here in all of the Americas, the Natives had to conform or die. So, so many records aren't even factual, there are even entire tribes that are "supposed" to be "extinct", but then I'll even find myself talking to the so called "extinct" people. That's why I want to look in Native Cuban records. And thanks for the tip on Spanish, it'll help me a bit. I just wish there was more.
