Mi tia que ya esta muy vieja me cuenta que por el 1966 Fidel para sacar y coger presos a los que estaban en contra de la revolucion decidio dar salida de Cuba si decian la verdad de lo que habian echo en contra de la revolucion. Mi tia me cuenta que ella cree que esos vuelos se llamaron "la verdad por la libertad" una vez la persona se entregaba y decia lo que hacia echo se lo llevaban preso para trabajar por 3 años y despues de eso podia salir de Cuba. Esto fue antes del Mariel y no esta relacionado. Alguien sabe si esto fue verdad, o se acuerda? Quizas tenia otro nombre... I saw your post on the Ancestry website. I was very excited to learn about your search. My brother, Ramon, and I are engaged in the same thing. We MAY be looking at the same family tree but many branches and centuries apart. Our grandmother was Eulogia Alafita, of Laredo, Texas, USA who descended from the first Alafita who came to the USA in 1850, and whose name appears in the U.S. Census of 1850. We believe that all the Alafitas in the USA today descend from the same individual. After much searching, we are close to concluding that we are related to all the Alafitas that exist in the USA and Mexico. And that we descend from the first Alafita for whom we can find a record, in 1760, in New Spain (Mexico). He was Juan Gaspar Alafita and, according to his marriage records in Merida, Yucatan, was from Cadiz, Spain. We have yet to find relevant records to him or his ancestors in Spain. We are unable to find references or records of any Alafitas anywhere else in the Spanish-speaking world. We believe that Juan Gaspar's name was changed, for reasons unknown, upon his arrival in New Spain from Lafita (sometimes spelled Laphita). We have found references to the fact that Lafita is a surname with origins in the old kingdom of, and now Spanish province of Aragon, which borders France. We suspect that the name actually comes from southern France and may originate in the Occitan-speaking region. Possibly, it may originally have been Lahite, and in any case may be related to many variations, including Lafitta, Lafite, Laffitte, Lafitte, Laffite and Lafitau. Today, Lafita is to be found in the following regions of Spain: Aragon, the Basque Country, Navarra, Catalunya, Madrid, Seville and Cadiz. However, it is not a very common surname. Perhaps, you can shed some light on our suspicions about the French origins of Lafita and the possibility that we may be very distant cousins? War continued with peak resistance during the Guerra Chiquita (circa 1878-1880); and culminating in the 1895-1898 War of Cuban Independence. Family oral history tells that somewhere between about 1889-1893 when grandfather who would never be tall and then at perhaps 14 to 16 was small for his age. At that time war smoldered in the eastern Cuba countryside. Near Campechuela at the western end of the Sierra Maestra, he was caught by a Spanish patrol, Grandfather was about to be hung, for such was the standard fate of any Cuban male caught in rural areas during rebellions. Just in time a Spanish officer took pity on his beardless youth and let him go. A reference that shows eastern Cuba was still at war circa 1893 is:Swiggum, S. and M. With the liquidation of this company, she reverted to B.I.S.N.Co in settlement of her mortgage. Sold to Bombay & Persia Steam Nav. My first cousin, Jorge Echevarria, is a GGGrandson of Isabel Rubio, and his Grandfather was Cesar Diaz-Gomez, your GGrandfather. The reason why Jorge's last name is Echevarria is because Cesar Diaz-Gomez's two surviving children, Aida and Gregorio Cesar (Jorge's father), were registered by Cesar Diaz-Gomez's brother-in-law, a man by the name of Ramon Echevarria, after Cesar died. Cesar Diaz-Gomez's first daughter, Julia, who was elder sister to Aida and Gregorio Cesar, was the only one of the three who received the Diaz last name, and she died of typhus early in her life. Both of Cesar's surviving children, Aida and Gregorio Cesar, migrated to Miami and died here (Gregorio Cesar, my uncle, in 1998). Gregorio Cesar was a prominent lawyer in Pinar del Rio (city) in the 1940s and 1950s, but was barred from the practice of law in the 1960s by the Revolutionary Government. Two of his children, includi! ng my cousin Jorge, preceded him as migrants to the US in the 1960s, and he finally immigrated to the US in the 1970s. His son Jorge is today a jewler in Miami. Fascinating story. If anyone would like to contact my cousin Jorge, please reply to this post and I will provide his information. But this post is so old that I'm not sure anyone will read it.
