Hello, I was advised to subscribe to this Group, I would like to know more about my family origins. I wrote last year to the Catholic Church in Pinar del Rio (email and traditional mail) without any answer. I did not find about my family in boats passenger's lists. My grandmother Maria Ruiz Fernandez was born the 11 oct 1883 in Viñales Cuba, daughter of Venancio Ruiz from Tanos (Santander) and of Eguiselda (or Egriselda) Fernandez Obregon (not sure of the second name) from Helguera (or Elguera) (Santander). Santander is in Spain. Her father Venancio Ruiz died en Viñales Cuba around 1889, then his widow ans his daughter turned to Spain. I think they were farmers of tobacco, in Viñales Cuba as others Brothers Ruiz, from them I heard they were exiled to Miami. I heard that my grandmother uncles gave their Name Ruiz to an ex-slave been with the family (maybe 10 years older than my grandmother). Could you please help me? Thank you, Yours sincerely, Elsa, Paris, Francia.

I have information about the Tapanes family in Tampa. I will say, however, that I have good photos of my great grandfather Cecilio Tapanes (b cir. 1850 in Matanzas) and he was extremely fair. His children were also--in fact several were blond. It is highly unlikely that there was Indian blood. I'm not a racist--I would be delighted to claim Indian ancestors, but I don't think that line of investigation will lead anywhere. He immigrated to Tampa, Florida around 1875. He married Dolores Vidal from the Canary Islands and had several children: Engracia, Ines, Ignacio, Angelo, Vicenta, Celia and Julio. The latter was my grandfather. Engracia, the first born, married a Sardinas (tilde on the n) who died quite young. All of the children were born in different parts of Florida (Tampa, Key West, Ocala, etc.). An interesting thing about the Tapanes family--there must have been impotence in the males, because only Ignacio and Julio had children. Ignacio's boys were both killed in the war. My grandfather had only one son, Julio Jr., who only had one daughter. My uncle Julio is very old now and is the last member of the male line of the Tampa Tapanes family.
