Deb, Thanks for the note. Yes, you are correct Warren P Thompson was born in Charlestown RI in 1840. There is some scandal here - he was born two months after his parents (Joseph Loomer Thompson (age 19) and Harriet Harvey (age 30) were married in Charlestown RI). In 1850 the family was living in Stonington CT, in 1860 in North Stonington, in 1870 in East Hampton LI, and in 1880 in Bozrah. Joseph died in 1887 in North Stonington on a farm that he bought in 1883. All census indicates that Joseph was born in CT, except the Bozrah census (as you noted it says RI). As I recall, Warren's death cert indicates his Joseph was born in CT and Warren's census data for 1900 (?) in Greenwich RI indicates Joseph was born in CT. Joseph, Warren (and his wife Lucretia Reynolds Thompson), and Harriet Harvey Thompson are all buried in North Stonington- evergreen cemetery. I am all but positive he was born in New London Co. Unfortunately, he was so poor that the only time he bought any property was in 1883, the rest of the time he was a laborer. The North Stonington clerk says there is no death record for Joseph in North Stonington. Question: I assume Joseph died in a neighboring town, not North Stonington. Is there any way to locate a death record besides writing to a town clerk? like a central CT state file? I will try to locate some of the newspapers you noted. I am 97% positive, though, that the Archives doesn't keep them. I go to Pittsfield NARA archives often. I will send them an e-mail to confirm this, however. Thanks for the help, Charlie King gg grandson of Joseph Loomer Thompson born 1821 someplace in CT (New London Co?) Dear Mr. King, We had already exchanged ideas earlier, but I wanted to point out that the 1880 Census notes that Joseph was born in RI and that his parents where also born there. Does the 1860 and 1870 census say CT instead? Was he alive in 1900? I looked at the 1850 Census to see the state of birth and it can be regarded as State omitted or as a ditto from the previous family. So I looked at their oldest child Warren (10 in 1850) in the 1880 Census and it notes that he was born in RI as well as his mother. Keep in mind that the information may have been given by another family member too. Still you may want to check to see what the other children said and also do a search in RI. 1880 Census Place: Bozrah, New London, Connecticut Source: FHL Film 1254108 National Archives Film T9-0108 Page 536C Relation Sex Marr Race Age Birthplace Joseph L. I found many in CONSULS. If you are looking to purchase your own copy, the CT State Library can tell you the microfilm manufacturer for a particular paper. If it is hard for you to come to CT, you may want to try the National Archives in Pittsfield, MA too. http://www.archives.gov/index.html Good Luck with your research.
