Influenza Epidemic 1918-1919, New London County I just received a Death Certificate for my great-grandfather, who died April 20, 1919, in Old Lyme. The primary cause of death was pneumonia, of 9 days duration; secondary cause was influenza, of 10 days duration. My guess would be this was toward the end of the horrible Influenza Epidemic, and I'm interested to know if many deaths occurred in the county around that time. And/or if anyone knows how I might be able to research this on-line, I'd appreciate any suggestions. Karlynn, The time frame you are speaking of is correct for the epidemic. My grandmother was left to die with it while in childbirth with her first child in 1918. She made it through with the aid of an old country veternarian and described it to my mom years later. At theheight of the epidemic the doctors would determine "how far gone"one was with the flu and not waste time with those they figured would not survive (as in the case of my grandmother). she also recalled the deaths were so prevelant that bodies were carted off in wagons. I saw a nice article about in The Day paper years ago and they should be able to provide plenty of info. If I recall correctly it was called swine flu, but I think it was identified as another strain. Info on the subject would be a nice post.
