    3. Are there Rogerene Church Records free online? Or anyplace? I know there won't be baptisms but I have read there are other things to be found. I have a Hattie ROGERS b.abt.1752 in CT. and have not been able to find her or anything about her. It occurred to me she might be a Rogerene as most of them were and that is why I can't find her. Said to have married David MINARD/MINER of NL Co. about 1774. Are ther Rogerene web sites? Pat. Maher __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! 3. Joyce: Search for your ancestors in the SEARCH, which is on http://www.rootsweb.com/~ctnewlon/ website. As I recall there are many WHEELERS in Stonnington or North Stonington. I have also come across CHAPMAN. It takes a lot of looking in Cemeteries, in Borbour Marriage Records, and the HALE Cemetary Inscriptions. Violet Moore Guy ----- Original Message ----- From: Joyce Ahern To: Violet O. Guy Sent: Wednesday, July 06, 2005 8:33 PM Subject: Henry S. Chapman, Stonington, CT Hello, I saw your message on CTNEWLON today and wondered if you could give me clue to try to get over my last brick wall? I have been looking for the parents of Henry S. Chapman and his brother George C. Chapman. Henry was born on Aug. 19, 1825 in CT. George was born about 1830. According to all the census records I have found for the two of them, their parents were also born in CT. Henry married Lydia E. Wheeler on August 12, 1849 and George married Lydia's sister Celia on August 31, 1851. I have not been able to find any information before the 1850 Census when Henry was married to Lydia, and George lived with them as well as Lydia's mother, Nancy Wheeler, her sisters Celia and Louisa and her brother John. Her father died in August of 1849. They were living in Stonington. Any pointers you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Joyce Ahern

It lists: Full Name of Groom Place of Residence Age in years Occupation Place of Birth Condition (single, divorced, widowed) Color Nationality of Parents Full Name of Bride Maiden Name, if Widow Place of Residence Age in years Occupation Place of Birth Condition (single, divorced, widowed) Color Nationality of Parents Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I think I may have addressed my first email wrong. So I apologize in advance if this is a repeat. 1. What information is on a 1858 marriage license issued in Groton for a Pawcatuck church. I have the cert from the church with the witnesses listed. Would the town license have more info i.e. birth place, parents etc? 2. I have a date of death for possible grandparents buried in St. Michael's pawcatuck cemetery. What newspaper would I look to first for a possible obit? Chrissie "The secret to friendship is being a good listener - Unknown"

What newspaper would I look to first for a possible obit? > > I have found, in Ma. that the towns and cities were required to record the vitals, the method of obtaining the info depended on whether it was a birth, death or marriage. Prior to 1844, in MA, the persons that performed marriages were required to submit a report to the Town Clerk yearly. (After 1844 the report was to be filed monthly.)The old "format" required the submitter to state "I married ... or... I united in matrimony;" and to sign the sheet. Several couples would be on the list. Each entry included his name, her name and often where each was from (if the were from outside the town the record was recording). Not mush else. In 1845 or so the register, the book, took on a new look. Columns and lines to be filled-up by the clerk meant a place to record each age, etc. Over the years the info recorded in a column changed. For example: there is a time when "Parents Name's" shared a column with "Spouse if applicable." They each get a column of their own at some point. By 1848 (1845?), to be sure they would receive the proper information, the Clerk required those that married people to fill out "certificates." If a priest in a Catholic Church did not "fill up" the cert. at the time of the marriage, he may have missed the opportunity to do so. His own Register of Matrimony, kept in Latin, did not require such detail. The priest that united them, the date, the names of each, and of the witness(es), was all he kept. I have found that the Worc. clerk was rather persistent, and the priests were reticent. After not forwarding any marriage info for more that 3 years, they send a long list. The list they sent in 1849 did not meet even the pre1844 requirements. The two lists that quickly followed were accepted (as was the first), despite the lack of detail. After this the situation seems to have improved. Omissions of entire marriages still occurred, but the ones they did turn in were pretty full. To address the question: Would the town license have more info i.e. birth place, parents etc? . Possibly, the cert. could have been sent along, all filled up. The Church record wasn't used to record such things, so the town may have more than the Matrimony Register. write a post when you find out. Good luck, John

    2. Christine Emond
    3. Hi Dick, Well I can tell you the Hanlon's you're looking for are not buried in Ledyard, which is across the river from Montville. As for Catholic churches try http://www.norwichdiocese.org/ This is the Diocese web page that covers New London county and then some. As for towns, try Norwich, Montville and New London, and Waterford. Those towns are all neighboring and your best bet. Each church listed has an established date so that should help as well. If you have no luck there I would contact the Diocese and tell them what you're looking for. Baptism records from 1857 Montville, which church would be my best bet. That sort of thing. As for cemeteries, I don't know so you may want to ask the Diocese about that as well. Unfortunately I see no kind of email address for the diocese. One thing I did note was that the Norwich Diocese wasn't established until 1953 and if they cannot help you with information back to the 1800's I would contact the Hartford Diocese. http://www.archdioceseofhartford.org/ They fortunately have an email address. 2. I have been lurking for a little while and this is (I think) my first post to this list. I and the many other descendants of Thomas RYLEY (b NYC in 1793, according to his marriage record) who m Esther ROGERS of New London (and who lived there for the rest of his life, afaik), would love to know something, anything, about him -- apart from his marriage and his children. Esther's family is pretty well sorted out; but the RYLEYs stop here. Some of his children and grandchildren spelled the name RILEY. Two of his children were called Sarah Godfrey RYLEY (1825-39) and John Covington RYLEY (1835-48), and since I have found neither Godfrey nor Covington on the ROGERS side, I have wondered whether it was a RYLEY connexion: but have found nothing.
