Hi, I've located a family marriage in Voluntown, CT that was performed by D. S. Hawley in 1865. He's listed as a "Minister of the Gospel". Can anyone tell me what religion he might be? I found that he was also in Tisbury, Martha's Vineyard until about 1858. Thanks, Paula

Question: Does anyone know who the parents of Dudley R THOMPSON were or his wife's maiden name? The 1860 census for Ledyard shows that Dudley was born in 1818 in Stonington, his wife,Harriet N (Noyes?) was born in 1820 in Groton, and their children were all born in Ledyard. I am looking for the parents and more exact birthdate of James W. JOHNSON, who was born about 1820, probably in Waterford. He married Hannah Lester BEEBE May 26, 1844 at the First Baptist Church in Waterford (I have obtained a copy of the marriage record from the Waterford Town Clerk). He died October 14, 1915, at the age of 95. Thanks, -Pat. LaBonte Wary

My gr.gr. aunt, Mary E. Church, married Elisha C. Holmes in New London, CT. June 1875. He was a fisherman, and I believe they lived most of their married life in East Lyme. Could he be the Elisha Holmes recently mentioned? Pat Robinson
Greetings! I'm new to the list - and searching for any information you might have on Mr James Taylor who died in 1754. A slate gravestone was recently uncovered here in Hampden County and the only James Taylor / 1754 we turned up at WorldConnect was born in Andover MA in 1683 and died in Preston CT, November 2 1754. It's in the hands of the town historian and we are curious to find out if a slate headstone exists in or around Preston which matches this apparent footstone. Have any of you run across a Colby C Holmes in your adventures? There is one listed that was involved in the war of 1812. The one that I know (for sure) I am related to was actually born in 1830 in Lyme, spent most of his life in the New London area as a fisherman and according to my grandfather had 9 sons. He lived at least a portion of his life on Hwy 1. He died of Septicemia around 1895 in New London. Among his sons were Elisha, Issac, Harry (or Henry), and Albert. He was married to Almira Fairfield born about 1835. I no other information about her at all.
I have another question about the Grants in Prestons that I hope someone can answer for me. Captain Noah Grant bought land in Preston in 1792 and built a house on it. Apparently it remained in possession of the Grant family until the 20th century. It was then given to the Boy Scouts of America. Does someone know when the family gave the house to the BSA? And, does anyone know if the house is still there and what it is now used for? My sources: /Preston in Review/, p. 149 and /Preston Early Homes and Families/, No, 53. published by the Preston Historical Society, Inc. Thank you, Janet

In the Stonington Baptist Records for 1772-1848 I found references to my ggg grandmother Susannah Harvey as well as William Spencer was is buried close to my gg grandfather, Joseph Loomer Thompson. This makes me think that maybe Joseph was a Baptist. Question: Are there any other Baptist Churches in New London Co in the late 1700s and early 1800s besides the Stonington Church? Ann Marr I don't have info on Martha Holmes, but I too have a brick wall in my Holmes line. My father is Robert R. Holmes and he is the son of Roland R. Holmes and Mildred (Gregory) Holmes. Both Roland and Mildred are deceased...my grandfather in 2002 and my grandmother in 2004. Roland's mother was Grace Holmes, father was never listed on the birth certificate. Grace was a daughter of Frank J. Holmes and Abagail Chapman. (Abagail's paternal line goes back to William Holmes of New London area, early 1600's). Frank Holmes was a son of Joseph Holmes and Lucy Morgan. Joseph Holmes was a son of William Holmes and Eliza Belden, who were married March 27, 1827 in Stepney Parish, which is now Rocky Hill, CT. From William Holmes is my brick wall. Some people have told me that William's parents may have been Ethan Holmes and Christiana Blinn, but we are not sure of that yet. I don't know if any of this info helps, but let me know. Be encouraged in your searches....we are all in this together. God bless. Rolande (Holmes) Gay
