    1. EAMES/AMES-BUSH-HULETT
    2. Hi all, I'm new to the list, and could really use some help!! I'm looking for information on Samuel EAMES, b.11/16/1751 Voluntown. According to the Barbour Collection and cemetery records online, here is an outline of what I DO know: Samuel EAMES, b.11/16/1751 m.Anne BENNET(T) on 11/101774 Voluntown b.c1757 d.10/5/1794 Their PROVEN children Eliphalet EAMES (son) b.5/28/1775 Voluntown d.11/6/1868 m.Alathea ______ b.c1780 d.11/8/1859 Mary EAMES b.3/28/1777 Voluntown Elizabeth EAMES b.10/23/1778 Voluntown Isaac EAMES b.8/11/1780 Voluntown Samuel married again Nabby _____ b.c1757 d.9/29/1801 Samuel's wives, Anne & Nabby, and son Eliphalet & his wife Alathea are all listed as buried in the Old South Killingly Cemetery under the name of AMES, but Samuel is NOT listed online as being there with them! I have found information on Samuel in several family trees on Rootsweb and other sites, but unfortunately, those I've been able to contact have no idea what the source for his information is! It appears that most of these people got their information passed onto them, so I have no way of proving that it's correct! I'm trying to connect a David AMES who married Charlotte, probably BUSH, and a Samuel AMES who married a Lucy, who also is probably a BUSH, as sons of the above Samuel EAMES/AMES. In the online trees, Samuel is listed as having died July 18, 1837 in Voluntown, after marrying a third wife, Chloe DAY. With wife Anne BENNETT, he had a total of nine children, among them are sons David and Samuel, who fit with information that I have found in NY on the people I am tracing. Also, the above daughter Elizabeth seems to have ended up in NY as well, married to Oliver HULETT (HEWLET/HEWLETT). In the early census records for NY, Oliver and Elizabeth AMES HULETT lived in close proximity to Samuel and Lucy AMES, and for a time, David and Charlotte AMES. David and Charlotte eventually moved to another town in the same county, but all three families are buried in close proximity in a small cemetery near where they all settled when they first arrived from CT, sometime in the early 1800s. I have a considerable amount of information on these three families AFTER they arrived in Western NY, but I can't PROVE they were siblings, nor who their parents were! I have also found information on an Almon (Almond) AMES, who appears to possibly have been a nephew to the above three "siblings", probably through the above Isaac AMES, listed in Barbour as a son of Samuel and Anne BENNETT AMES. He lived near them and is buried near them, and there is a woman listed in the census records who seems to fit as Almon's mother, but again, I can't PROVE his lineage!! There is also a daughter, Jerusha AMES listed as being a daughter to Samuel and Anne BENNETT AMES, listed as born March 17, 1791, who I am also interested in. She MAY have ended up out here as well, but I have no proof as to whom she married! ANY help with this family would be GREATLY appreciated, as I seem to have gone about as far as I can without physically going to CT!! THANKS in advance! Joan in Western NY

    1. RATHBUN - PENN Family Photograph
    2. Shelley Cardiel
    3. I've "rescued" two old photographs, both identified as Mrs. Nannie PENN or Aunt Nannie PENN. The first was taken at the A. V. Caro Studio in New York City, NY, probably sometime in the 1880's with Nannie appearing to be in her 30's at the time. The second photograph was taken at the Kenyon Studio in New London, CT, likely sometime in the early 1900's with Nannie looking to be in her 60's at the time. Based on limited research I believe these are photographs of Nancy B. RATHBUN PENN. Nancy B. RATHBUN was b. 27 Nov 1856 in Noank, CT to parents Calvin RATHBUN and Rebecca PRENTICE. Nancy married Walter R. PENN on the 17th of Sept 1874 in Stonington, CT and died 22 Apr 1914 in CT. Her husband Walter was still alive at the time of her death. During the 1880 census the couple was living in Groton, CT with census records providing the following information: Walter PENN, age 30, born MD, a Stone Quarryman, parents born MD Nannie B. PENN, age 23, born CT, Housekeeping, parents born CT In 1900 I found the couple still living in Groton, CT with census records indicating the following information: Walter PENN, age 50, born Apr 1850, married 26 years, born PA, parents born PA, a Pilot Nannie B. PENN, wife, age 40, born Nov 1859, married 26 years, no children, born CT, parents born CT Rebecca PENN, niece, age 15, born Mar 1884, born NJ, parents born NJ/CT, at School Lucy COLLINS, boarder, age 15, born Nov 1885, born CT, parents born NJ/CT, at School And in 1910 still living in Groton, CT with census records under the name PEUN providing the following information: Walter PEUN, age 58, married 35 years, born PA, parents born PA, a Mariner Nannie B. PEUN, age 53, married 35 years, 1 child/none living, born CT, parents born CT Lucy COLLINS, niece, age 24, born CT, parents born NJ/CT George RATHBUN, brother-in-law, age 51, born CT, parents born CT, a Lobster Fisherman Another photograph recovered from the same source may well be related, it is of Abby RATHBUN MEISTER and Almon MEISTER which was taken at the Washburn Studio in New London, Connecticut. The photograph appears to have been taken in the 1890's with Abby likely in her 40's and young Almon likely about 10-12 years old at the time. I'm hoping to locate someone from the family so that these wonderful old photographs can be returned to the care of family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley

    3. Hi Carol, I am looking at transcribed Vital Records of Lyme, which unfortunately do not offer more than you have already, but the date given of that marriage is 28 Jan 1838 by Joshua R Warren, Justice of the Peace. Definitely lots of Eldridge's in the Chatham area in the 1830 census. I can see the difficulty of linking your John to one of these families... might take an angel to make your connection. : ) Eric -----Original message----- From: "carol oveson" caroline59@izoom.net Date: Fri, 17 Mar 2006 16:04:53 -0700 To: CTNEWLON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [CTNEWLON-L] Looking for Grandfather John Eldridge > Hello List: Isn't there anyone out there who descends from a John Eldredge/Eldridge born in Chatham between 1800-1810? John is my gggreatgrandfather and I have been trying to tumble this brick wall for so long now I am getting discouraged. All I know about John is what the marriage entry from Lyme CT tells me. > John Eldridge married in January 25, 1838 to Mary Ann Chadwick. She was from Lyme and John is from Chatham. No birth dates given. I find this couple later in the 1840 census of Lyme and they have a male child under five which would be my great-grandfather John. They also had a daughter born in 1841. I find her in many census records but the problem with our family is that most of the men were named John and the girls were Eliza J or Elizabeth. The marriage between John and Mary Ann was dissolved in 1851 by divorce. He apparently left her around 1843. She married Amos Huntley after her divorce was granted in 1851. He was her third marriage. Where can one find voting records or perhaps tax records to see if John voted or paid taxes. I think he may have gone back to Chatham but do not know. If any of this sounds familiar, please email me at caroline59@izoom.net > > Thanks ever so much in advance > Carol Eldridge MN

    2. I am trying to find the family of my 2xggmother Augusta MILLER. She was born in May 1821 and m George RYLEY (also RILEY); they had six children and lived in New London CT. I cannot find anything about her parents or siblings. The 1900 census (where Ancestry.com has her as Huguette Ryley) says her father was b in Massachusetts, but in 1880 it has CT for both parents -- it may be relevant that in 1880 her husband probably filled in the form, whereas in 1900 she was a widow and perhaps did it herself. Or in 1900 her son (who lived next door) did it and didn't know where his grandpa was from... Take your pick! I have searched the online Barbour Collection at _http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/barbour/newlond_main.htm_ (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/barbour/newlond_main.htm) , but it warns that births after 1800 are not there and need to be searched for in the hard copy. Is there SKS who could look out Augusta for me? Or suggest some other line of enquiry which I could pursue from England? Many thanks. 1. re: a tangle for Prudence Stanton/Staunton
    2. I am trying to sort out Prudence Stanton (or Staunton) who married Robert Fargo. Her headstone says she was born 1734 - she died 19 Jul 1818 in New London, probably Montville. I do know Prudence had a brother named John - no other info on him. There is a Prudence, b. 22 Apr 1726 in Stonington - daughter of Thomas and Thankful Denison. That man did have a duaghter named Prudence, but she married Giles Russell and did not have a brother John. One researcher says Thomas was b. 7 Apr 1708 in Groton. Married 20 Mar 1732 Lucy Bailey and had a child Thomas b.14 Jan 1745. The researcher shows a second marriage for Thomas, with a spouse b. 1715 and a marriage date of 1735. This unnamed spouse is supposedly Prudence Stanton's mother. Thomas is indentified as a son of John Stanton and Ann Huchison, and grandson of Thomas Stanton and Sarah Denison. No sources given. I have information on Thomas and Sarah - I do not show a son named John for them. Another researcher has Lucy Bailey, b. 10 May 1712 married to Thomas Stanton, b. 7 Apr in Groton, with child Prudence, b. 1734 in Groton. This Lucy's parents were Thomas Bailey and Jane Wilba, who married 13 June 1711. No further info and no sources. Does anyone have knowledge of these various Thomas Stantons and can confirm - or more likely deny - these claims? Prudence's ancestry has not been solved by professionals - maybe the wide reach of the Internet will pry it loose. Thanks, Ann Marr

    1. Whipple, late 1700's - need help please
    2. A few years ago I spent a couple of days in the Groton/Ledyard area, searching for the parents of my 3rd great-grandmother Thankful Whipple, (c. 1781-1862), wife of Ebenezer Hempstead. I also spent a few hours at the Connecticut State Library but came up empty-handed. I have been searching, without success, ever since. I have a few possibilities and would be grateful for any help. First, does anybody have information about Elijah, son of Zephaniah and Keziah Parke Whipple? His wife was Rebecca (dau of Avery Denison and Thankful Williams). Elijah reportedly went to Trumbull Co OH in 1835 to live w/his children. Elijah could have been the father of my Thankful Whipple - based on following: 1. He lived at the right time and place, and there are 2 females in his home in the 1790 census. I assume one is a daughter, since both his mother and mother-in-law died before 1790. 2. My Thankful could have been named for Thankful Williams Denison, possibly her grandmother. 3. My Thankful had a granddaughter named Adelaide *Denison* Brewster. She had daughters named Lucy, Eliza Leeds, Maria and Esther, and at least one son - name unknown, but possibly William or Henry. Maybe those names are clues to identifying her ancestors. Are the names known for any of Elijah's children? Who was the one that moved to Trumbull Co OH? I'd like to try to find living descendants who might have more information. Also, with the name Thankful, I wondered if there could be a Rogerene connection - they often used Christian qualities when naming their daughters. I have ruled out Thankful, the dau of Silas Whipple and Esther Watrous - she is too young by 15 years and her marriage is documented in records. Second - I have also wondered about William Whipple who was married to Mercy Gallup. Could they be her parents? Thankful and Ebenezer lived among the Gallup families on Shewesville Road, Ledyard, early in their marriage before removing to Norwich (Yantic Mill area) between 1810 and 1820. Third - One more possibility is the following marriage, per William Williams, JP of Cider Hill, Ledyard. Whipple, Samuel & Bathsheba Holt, 29 Nov. 1778. This was apparently Samuel's 2nd marriage. He might be the Samuel who was married (1) to Eunice Mitchell. She might be Bathsheba Lamb, widow of Nathaniel Holt. I'd appreciate more information about them. Could this provide a clue to Thankful Whipple's family? Holt was Ebenezer Hempstead's maternal ancestral line. Ebenezer was engaged in manufacturing in the 1810 census. He may have moved to Norwich to work in the mills there. He last appears in the 1820 census in Norwich, and his wife is head of house in every census thereafter until her death. I have visited her grave in Yantic cemetery but have no idea when, where or how Ebenezer Hempstead died. Are there newspapers that cover Norwich for years 1822-1830? Thank you so much for any help!
