    1. [CTNEWLON-L] New London to NJ
    2. Berg, Kevin J.
    3. Hello listers. I am a visitor from Morris Co., NJ. I have a strong feeling the ancestor (b. 1710-1725) I am looking for came from your area. I have also noticed other surnames you have here also in my area of Morris Co., so maybe they migrated together. Does anyone have migration routes from New London, CT area to NJ? Does anyone in your group have ancestors who went to Morris Co., NJ for one or more generations before moving on? Thanks, Kevin Berg http://home.earthlink.net/~kevinjberg/genealogy.html

In your transcript of the will of Joseph Eggleston, father of Gershom Eggleston, he leaves one dollar to his grandson, John Lanphier. He lists four daughters, however none of them appear to be married to a Lanphier. I am guessing that John Lanphier is a brother of Lucretia Lanphier, their mother being a deceased (in 1801) Eggleston daughter. Or possibly one of the three married daughters listed in the will was married twice. If you have any other ideas I would be thrilled to hear them.

    2. Geneva T. Malenfant
    3. I am doing some research on the Whipple family, my husband's relatives. I have gotten to the following on the 1850 census in Stonington William Whipple 65 laborer Nancy Whipple 53 Sarah A. 16 Erastus L.? 12 Charles W. 7 Erastus is the Whipple which leads to my husband's family. Does any one know anything about William or his wife before 1850. There are Whipples in earlier census, Rebekah, Mercy and Joseph, but I can't tell if they are connected. Thanks.

The last person I have found is Daniel Thomas b. 16 Nov 1836 in Groton and d. 10 July 1836. He was married to Eunice Baker b. 14 July 1758/9 in Groton. d. 12 Oct 1837. (Thanks to this board I have found a lot on information on Eunice's family)! I know that Daniel and Eunice had at least one child Seabury Thomas who was my great-great-great Grandfather. He was also born in Groton. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I know that at one time a relative told me there was a Thomas Street in Groton and the "Thomas house" still had Thomas' living in it but that was at least 10 years ago.

    3. I don't have the number of cases of influnza in the 1918 epidemic, but this might give you an idea. I found this note I had received from another list. Hope it helps, Kathy -- In case you ever wondered why a large number of your ancestors disappeared during a certain period in history, his might help. Epidemics have always had a great influence on people - and thus influencing as well, the genealogists trying to trace them. Many cases of people disappearing from records can be traced to their dying during an epidemic or moving away from the affected area. Some of the major epidemics in the United States are listed below: 1657 Boston Measles 1687 Boston Measles 1690 New York Yellow Fever 1713 Boston Measles 1729 Boston Measles 1732-3 Worldwide Influenza 1738 South Carolina Smallpox 1739-40 Boston Measles 1747 CT,NY,PA,SC Measles 1759 N. America [areas inhabited by white people] Measles 1761 North America and West Indies Influenza 1772 North America Measles 1775 N. America [especially hard in NE] epidemic Unknown 1775-6 Worldwide [one of the worst epidemics] Influenza 1783 Dover, DE ["extremely fatal"] Bilious Disorder 1788 Philadelphia and New York Measles 1793 Vermont [a "putrid" fever] and Influenza 1793 VA [killed 500 in 5 counties in 4 weeks] Influenza 1793 Philadelphia [one of the worst epidemics] Yellow Fever 1793 Harrisburg, PA [many unexplained deaths] Unknown 1793 Middletown, PA [many mysterious deaths] Unknown 1794 Philadelphia, PA Yellow Fever 1796-7 Philadelphia, PA Yellow Fever 1798 Philadelphia, PA [one of the worst] Yellow Fever 1803 New York Yellow Fever 1820-3 Nationwide [starts Schuylkill River and spreads] "Fever" 1831-2 Nationwide [brought by English emigrants] Asiatic Cholera 1832 NY City and other major cities Cholera 1837 Philadelphia Typhus 1841 Nationwide [especially severe in the south] Yellow Fever 1847 New Orleans Yellow Fever 1847-8 Worldwide Influenza 1848-9 North America Cholera 1850 Nationwide Yellow Fever 1850-1 North America Influenza 1852 Nationwide [New Orleans-8,000 die in summer] Yellow Fever 1855 Nationwide [many parts] Yellow Fever 1857-9 Worldwide [one of the greatest epidemics] Influenza 1860-1 Pennsylvania Smallpox 1865-73 Philadelphia, NY, Boston, New Orleans} {Smallpox Baltimore, Memphis, Washington DC} Cholera and a series of recurring epidemics of: Typhus, Typhoid, Scarlet Fever, Yellow Fever 1873-5 North America and Europe Influenza 1878 New Orleans [last great epidemic] Yellow Fever 1885 Plymouth, PA Typhoid 1886 Jacksonville, FL Yellow Fever 1918 (high point year) Influenza Worldwide more people were hospitalized in WWI from this epidemic than wounds. US Army training camps became death camps, with 80% death rate in some camps. Finally, these specific instances of cholera were mentioned: 1833 Columbus, OH 1834 New York City 1849 New York 1851 Coles Co., IL, The Great Plains, and Missouri ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Owner of -- New England Genealogy http://pages.prodigy.net/kathyb/home.htm & New England Native American Mailing List http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/Ethnic-Native/NEW-ENG-NATAM.html ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

    2. Robin
    3. Karlynn, The time frame you are speaking of is correct for the epidemic. My grandmother was left to die with it while in childbirth with her first child in 1918. She made it through with the aid of an old country veternarian and described it to my mom years later. At theheight of the epidemic the doctors would determine "how far gone"one was with the flu and not waste time with those they figured would not survive (as in the case of my grandmother). she also recalled the deaths were so prevelant that bodies were carted off in wagons. I saw a nice article about in The Day paper years ago and they should be able to provide plenty of info. If I recall correctly it was called swine flu, but I think it was identified as another strain. Info on the subject would be a nice post. Good luck, Robin [email protected] wrote: > Influenza Epidemic 1918-1919, New London County > I just received a Death Certificate for my great-grandfather, who died April 20, 1919, in Old Lyme. 1. [CTNEWLON-L] Baptisms--some comments
    2. David Hoffman
    3. Thanks to all for the appreciative notes I've received regarding the postings of baptisms. This makes the effort well worthwhile. I've located some incidental material regarding the various pastorates of the church, including the author of the book I've been using. He was pastor from 1887-1902. It's located at http://pages.cthome.net/firstchurchnl/history.htm It's nice to have additional documentation of our ancestors for our files but please remember that these postings are only a copy of a copy of the original records. Although I've attempted to do careful proofreading, I can not swear to the complete accuracy of the baptismal transcription. As always, it's preferable to see the original records. And if that's not possible, one should check S. Leroy Blake's book. Blake made every effort to maintain the spelling of the original records, and I’ve endeavored to do the same in transcribing his information. If anyone needs a page number for a particular entry, please email me off-list with the date included. The baptisms run from pages 445-556 and I have no index of names. Currently the material transcribed runs from page 445 through page 533.
