    1. [CTNEWLON-L] John L. and Hannah (Griffin(g)) Griffin(g) family, Flanders, LI, NY
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Griffing, Griffin, Cory, Craig, Pollard, Phillips, Benjamin, Wells, Squires, Mitchell, Ritch Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XZ.2ADE/1461 Message Board Post: I am looking for information on and/or descendants of the family of John L. and Hannah Amanda Griffin(g) Griffin(g) of Flanders, Suffolk Co., Long Island, NY. The family ran a farm adjoining Flanders Bay from about 1840 into the twentieth century. It is shown on old maps available on longislandgenealogy.com under the name “J. Griffin” and “J. Griffing.” John L. Griffin(g) was born on March15, 1815 in Connecticut. According to a book written about 1895 about Suffolk Co. and its prominent men, his father’s name was Henry, also b. CT. Both Henry and John himself spent time at sea before settling down as farmer fishermen. John Griffin(g) married Hannah Griffin(g) (her maiden name) sometime before 1839. Hannah was born in New York, most probably Suffolk Co, on August 28, 1817. John died September 6, 1898, and Hannah died July 13, 1899. They are buried in Flanders Cemetery. Child 1: Oliver Cassandre Griffin(g) b. c. 1839, d.c. 1920, who married first Hattie Conklin of Good Ground, then Fannie Ella Pollard of Stonington, CT, was captain of the steamer Massachusetts and settled in Stonington. Two children: William Pollard Griffin, b.c.1880, Grace Pollard Griffin, b.c. 1884 , one known grandchild, William Griffin. Child 2: Hannah Amanda Griffin(g) b.c.1841, d.c.1824, married E.W. Phillips of Quoque, two known children: Burt Phillips, Edward Phillips. Child 3: John H. Griffin(g) b.c.1844, d.c.1880, married Susan H. Wells, lived near his father in Flanders. Two known children: Herbert W. Griffin(g) b.c. 1864, Annie Griffin(g)b.c. 1874. Herbert W. Griffin(g) married Elizabeth Mitchell. Child 4: William E. Griffin(g) b.c.1847 d. young. Child 5: Charles F. Griffin(g) b.c. 1848, married Ellen E., 2 known children: Leroy b.c. 1884, and Edith L. (Nettie) b.c. 1887. Found in Riverhead census. Child 6: Joseph b. September 1851, married Annie L. Benjamin. Found in Southampton. 3 known children: Vesser b.1886, Jannie, b. 1889, and Louis Samuel, b. 1894. Vesser appears to have had a son named Vesser who died 1991 in Arkansas. Louis m. Myrtle Claire Ritch. They are listed as having one living child. Child 7: Samuel S. Griffin(g) b.c. 1853, d. 1922. Married Anna E. Squires. Two children: Blanche m. Thomas Havens and Fannie (never m.). Samuel went to sea early, then returned home c. 1885 and ran the farm. He ran it as a duck/poultry farm until he was aged, then the farm was run by Thomas and Blanche Havens. Child 8: Mary Rebecca Griffin(g) b. Oct. 24 1854, d. 1936. Married Edwin F. Cory and lived in New Haven, CT. Children: George, Frank, Elsie (my grandmother), Ida, Ruth, Marian. Frank m. Anna and had a daughter Luree. Ruth m. Frank Thorall, daughter Ann. Elsie m. George R. Craig, daughter Janet, sons Wilmot, George. Child 9: Franklin b. 1859 d. young. I would be interested in sharing information about this family. I am trying to trace the lineage of both John and Hannah. Hannah may have Riverhead connections. I can find no trace of a Henry Griffin or Griffing in CT who has a son named John who fits these facts, and am wondering if that name is accurate.

My father was the trustee for the cemetery for a number of years. That particular grave does have an interesting history, you have stated about all I know. The only other bit of information is that the individual is also said to have been buried with their head on the down slope instead of the more conventional head pointing up the hill. May be folk lore.

If you don't see Plains Rd, Meetinghouse Rd is nearby on the other side of Rte 32 and town hall is by the firehouse, within view as soon as you turn onto Meetinghouse. I sent you an email privately but I'm not sure you got mine either. I hope I am correct that you are replying to me not Joan but I am descended from Ezra Brown's dau Lucy Jane and her husband Otis Wilson. He was originally from Rowe, MA and she is said to have been born 6/11/1791 in Cooperstown, NY or Orange??, NY(wherever that is). They had thier first child, Horace, in Preston, Chenango Co., NY and I presume as they were married 3/27/1817 in NY it was in Cooperstown or Chenango Co. The family believes the Browns were from CT, Ezra served in the Revolution and recieved a land bounty in Western NY. They also thought his father was Ezra or Nathan. I hope we have a connection and if not good Luck in your search. Rick Shea Schenectady, NY
