    1. Re: [CTNEWLON-L] Certified ONLY Copies?
    2. Hemlock
    3. Interesting. For a few years now, whenever someone said, "It's the law.", I have requested the statute number. That request generally throws the salesperson, or whomever, into a tip and more often than not they back off. Apparently, someone decided that by making the statement about the law, it was an easy way to wiggle out of something. One salesman whom I challenged even back off saying, "Well, uh, er, "It's a store law!" <G> Pat ----- Original Message ----- From: "Linda Smith" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, August 30, 2002 1:01 PM Subject: Re: [CTNEWLON-L] Certified ONLY Copies? > > I don' t know what the law is in Conn. concerning certified copies. > Here is a suggestion, when the town clerk or anyone else tells you that > you can only get certified copies because it is the law, ask them to > show you the law. 2. Hi! Just a quick question...is it the law in CT that you are only allowed to obtain CERTIFIED copies of Vital Records? I have been obtaining photocopies of many records..here in CT...and never have I been told that I can only get a CERTIFIED copy...that is until I went to Stonington, CT...there the Town Clerk told me that it is the law. Thanks! Jen

Here is a suggestion, when the town clerk or anyone else tells you that you can only get certified copies because it is the law, ask them to show you the law. It may be that it is county or town law and not a state law. Linda [email protected]

    3. Thought when I responded to Linda's query it would come to the list, but it did not. I will post what I sent to her and also some other information I just came across. Based on information I collected at the Historical Society in Lyme, Stephen and Lydia had the following four children: Theophilus, Nicholas, Dorothy, and Anna. Lydia died in 1765 and Stephen remarried to Susanna Huntley. They had at least one child, Stephen. The only Reuben listed in the information was the son of Joseph and Mary (Unknown) Ransom, born ca. 1750. Joseph and Mary had eleven children. Joseph was Stephen's brother. I have not verified any of this information. Much of the research seems to have been conducted by a Josiah O. Hatch and a Harry Ransom. Lyme Land Records 20:22 and 20:225: Theophilus Gates and wife Dorothy deed 25 Sept 1786 to Samuel Beckwith of E. Haddam. Dorothy is named as daughter of Lydia (Lord) Ransom. Note placed beside entry on Dorothy: b. 1756, d. 1855, m. 1781. Theophilus Ransom of Watertown, Conn deeds 24 Sept 1784 "to my natural sister Annah Beckwith and her husband Samuel Beckwith ... piece of land that fell to me and my 2 sisters Annah and Dorothy by our honoured mother Lydia Ransom (Lord) dec'd which fell to her by her father Theop. had dec'd. 3. Linda, I'm on my out the door and can't do any real scratching around for a Reuben at this time; however, as David said, Stephen and Lydia (LORD) RANSOM did have at least one son that I know about, Theophilus, b. 1751 - died 1823 in VT. He married a Susan BYRAN. They had 2 sons - that I know about, Stephen and Merritt - both born in Rutland, VT. Like David said, Stephen md. 2nd Susannah Huntley c 1768. My info on these particular RANSOMs comes from: Huntley, Alice P., "John Huntley and Some of His Descendants" in The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, Vol. 101 (1947) (CD; Boston: NEHGR & Broderbund Software, Inc., 1996). Johnston, Jean, "Truman Lord Ransom, 1826 NY - 1906 IA," Ransom Researcher, Issue #7 (Sep 1994). RANSOM research by Oscar Fricke and Jane Ransom Fricke of Mission Viejo, CA, 1988, selected pages of Matthew/1 and Joseph/2 RANSOM sent to me by Michael Ransom, publisher of the Ransom Researcher. Ransom, James R., "Moses Y Ransom 1838 - ?," Ransom Researcher, Issue #18 (June 1997). 1. [CTNEWLON-L] Re: Norwich Families - YOUNG, CHALMERS, ODGEN, MURRAY, O'NEIL
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Young, Mitchell, Chalmers, McCormick Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/XZ.2ADE/1458.2 Message Board Post: I am a descendant of Andrew Young and Mary Mitchell. I think that they may have come to Norwich around 1860 because Andrew does not appear in the Norwich Directories of 1857 or 1860, but he does appear in the 1861 directory and he and Mary and family also appear in the 1860 census with the John Chalmers family as follows: John Chalmers, 32, M, papermaker, Scot Mary, 32, F, Housekeeper, Scot Andrew, 6, M, CT John, 3, M, CT Mary J (Jean), 1, F, CT Andrew Young, 60, M, Scot Mary, 55, F, Scot Chas (Charles), 21 M, papermaker, Scot Busbary (Barbara), 19, F, Scot It appears that John Chalmers and his wife Mary were in CT at least since 1854, since the three children listed in the census were born there. Last week I visited Norwich and found the headstones for Andrew Young and Mary Mitchell and Mary Jean in the little possibly Scottish cemetery on Hickory St. Until that moment, I didn't know what had happened to Andrew and Mary - did not know that they had made the journey with all the other relatives who emigrated from Dublin, Ireland. There are additional children of Andrew and Mary. I am a direct descendant of their son John J. Young who was born in 1834. Andrew Young and Mary Mitchell were born in Paisley, Scotland. John J. Young was born in Lancashire, England. The family moved at some point to Dublin, Ireland. They were papermakers and allegedly had some special paper-making technique that they took from Paisley to England to Dublin and finally to Norwich, CT. John J. Young converted to R.Catholic to marry Irish Mary McCormick/McCormack. Family legend has it that this caused a lot of friction in the family - a big rift - and I didn't find out until last week that Andrew and Mary might still have been on speaking terms with their R.C. son, because they practically lived next door to each other in Norwich. John J. Young and Mary McCormick didn't emigrate to Norwich until about 1867. The tombstones read: Mary Mitchell wife of Andrew Young Died January 9 1877 Aged 75 years Gone but not forgotten Andrew Young a native of Scotland died July 28 1864 He is not dead but sleepeth Between the two stones on the other side is a small stone which reads simply "Mary Jean" There was also a stone for Barbara Young wife of William Ogden 1841-1883 and stones left to right : Mary Young his daughter 1872 Thomas Young 1850-1909 Janet D. (Davidson?) Murray his wife 1859-1940 I think Andrew Young and Mary Mitchell may also have had a son named Robert. I also think that Mary, wife of John Chalmers, was a daughter of Andrew Young and Mary Mitchell. There was another Andrew Young in the Norwich, CT, 1860 census. He was 7 years old, but he lived at another residence. I do not know why. He was born in CT. You can see what I have on the descendancy of Andrew Young and Mary Mitchell at this URL: http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=marain&id=I345 You need to put the above all in one line for the address of the page. As you will see, I have no info on Charles Andrew, Mary (who married John Chalmers), Busbary, or Thomas. I am sure now that my John J. was part of this family and I would love to correspond with you about all this. Please write to me! Marian

    3. I'm not sure if I've posed this question to the list so please forgive me if it's a duplication. Obviously, I haven't found the answer to my inquiry yet! I have a copy of a 1791 land record from Lyme that shows a Reuben Ransom deeding land to Abraham Emerson II. Several relatives of Abraham also deeded him land at this same time. Abraham II's mother was Deborah Lord. Deborah's sister, Lydia, was married to Stephen Ransom. However, as far as I've been able to tell, Lydia & Stephen had no sons. Does anyone have a record of a Reuben Ransom and how he might fit into this picture? Many thanks... Linda __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
