Pat was right about archive.org It's a superb research tool for web sites that have vanished--as long as you know the URL. I believe Lathrop Cemetery is in Salem. There were three or four cemeteries that the Knotts transcribed and photographed years ago, all in Salem. As much as I support local genealogy and county sites, I'm realizing how important it may be to copy cemetery transcriptions and vital records to the USGenweb Archives. People change web hosts or sometimes just get bored with genealogy. I'm sure I'm not alone in having lost several good genealogy friends in the last couple of years, and their personal genealogy sites just disappear. Scary thought. Marge, There has been a link to the off-site Lathrop Cemetery from the New London County CTGenWeb site for several years (it was there when I adopted the New London County site in 1999). Until I saw your message, I didn't realize that all of the cemetery transcriptions Linda and Gill Knott had done are gone. So far this morning, I have not been able to locate a new URL for any of them, and I'm afraid that it's been years since I've had any contact with Linda. I'll keep looking. Not that I am an expert, but I have the New London Town cemetery Hale collection. At that time there was not a Lathrop Cemetery in New London Town. Carolyn E. Would the Barbour Collection possibly have a birth that occurred at Norwich, CT 1751? Or is that too early? thanks, Charles
Was there any coal mining in the Norwich area in the mid 1700s? thanks, Charles
I just added 5 cemeteries in Old Lyme, CT to the Cemetery listing section of my web site. 1) Wait Cemetery in the eastern part of town 2) Champion Cemetery #2 3) Old Meeting house Hill Cemetery 4) Griswold Cemetery 5) Wait Cemetery in South Lyme These cover from the 1600's to about 1920, there are many Revolutionary and Civil war Veterens listed in these files. The Griswold Cemetery includes Governor Roger Griswold ( 1762 - 1812). There are 5 more cemeteries in Old Lyme that I plan on adding sometime. http://www.rays-place.com Cheers Ray Brown
Once a guardian was appointed for a minor, was there ever any follow-up in CT by the Courts? Is there some other type of Probate File I should be looking for after the estate is settled to see how the guardianship was being handled and when and if it was terminated? What is that file called? Thanks, Pat. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com
Re: Elsie DeWolf is this THE Elsie Dewolf? if so, she's considered the mother of American Interior Decoration and much has be written about her - Meg Smeal
No, it isn't the same person. The famous Elsie DEWOLF was born in 1865. I've "rescued" an original marriage certificate belonging to Winfield S. DEWOLF and his bride Mary J. STORY, who were married on the 14th of March 1889 at Norwich, Connecticut by the Pastor D. H. TAYLOR at the Central Baptist Church. Based on limited research and the help of a DEWOLF Family researcher I know that Winfield Scott DEWOLF died in 1933 and that his wife Mary Jane STORY was b. 8 April 1866 at Preston, CT to parents Ebenezer STORY and Mary Esther AVERY. Mary Esther and her children were recorded in the 1880 census, noting that her husband was deceased and her 25 year old son Ebenezor STORY was head of household. Mary E. Story is noted as age 55 with four children living at home in addition to Ebenezor, they are Nancy M. age 32, Carrie E. age 22, Thomas W. age 20, and Mary J. age 14. Two additional children are listed as Ebenezor's daughters, Hanna A. age 10 and Lucy A. age 7 suggesting that Ebenezor was likely married early though no spouse is listed in the household. Indications are that Winfield and Mary Jane DEWOLF had two children during the 1890's, Ebenezer S. DEWOLF and Elsie DEWOLF, though nothing more is known about either of the children. I'm hoping to locate someone from their family so that this wonderful old treasure can be returned to the family. If you are a member of this family, or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
I'm going to call this Church, but want to know what I'm talking about before doing that. Are the early to mid 1700s records at the Church or held elsewhere? Did the Church have a cemetery? Who would search the early Church records? thanks, Charles
Hello, While going through an early volume of _The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey_, I came across an article about the family of Daniel Landon of Stonington, who married Dorothy Holdredge in 1718. His children were in New Jersey by the 1750s. If you're interested, this multi-generation genealogy can be found in the article, "The Landon Family of New Jersey" by Charles Carroll Gardner in GMNJ 10:73-103. Judi Watson
Hello again folks, I do apologize for having to correct my previous post. I was trying to convey that it is not inappropriate to thank someone (via the list) for helping you. Be kind and patient with each other. Thanks, Lane
Greetings to all, I see that it is time to remind everyone that if you have a problem or a concern with a posting or the contents of a posting to the list to send them to me and not to the list. You are encouraged to send notes of a personal nature to the address of the person and not to the list. However, it certainly is not inappropriate if you do not. So gentlemen (and ladies) we need to move on. Sincerely, Lane Alexander List administrator lanealexander@hotmail.com
