I also checked the 1900 census index by genealogy.com. I looked at the Ham (probably Hans) Sorenson family which was living at 28 View Street in New Haven, New Haven, Conn. There was no Michael in that family. I also looked for 52 View Street and there was no Sorenson/Serenson/Sorensen/Serensen family living there in 1900. Probably the Sorenson family lived there in 1897 when Michael was born and then moved. You would need to know his father's name, or the name of the head of the household in 1900 in order to locate the family in the index. I do not think the family name was changed by the immigration people. There were multiple families with the Sorenson spelling in 1900 and only one woman with the Serenson spelling in the index for Connecticut. There were even more for 1910 with the addition of Sorensen (many of them probably changed the spelling of their own name or the census taker misspelled it). The same Sorenson family (Ham/Hans had died by then) was residing at 48 View Street, New Haven, Conn. in 1910. The mother, Betsy/Bessie was still alive. Carolee Smith
