    2. Richard Jones
    3. Looking for certain key facts pertaining to David Jones and his wife Ann (Thomas) Jones. Top of the list is birth information in Wales (not pertinent to this list), and death information (certificate, obit, or cemetery) possibly in New Haven, or in the case of Ann, other counties in CT (Note BMD indexes from the FHL for New Haven 1860-1898 have been examined, and many of the records during those years with no luck). Any New Haven city directory information after 1870? - 1900? will be greatly appreciated. Known facts are as follows; David Jones (1) was born in 1809 in Wales. His place of birth in a family record is given as "Bolla", Wales. No town named "Bolla" has been found in Wales, although there is a Bala in Llanfor Parish, Montgomeryshire which is a possibility. It is unlikely that he was christened with a middle name, since in the early 1800's the use of a middle name in Wales was uncommon. However in later records his name is given as David V. Jones. Based on the family record, the name of his son, and the naming practices of the time, it is likely he used the name David Vaughn Jones, where Vaughn is the maiden name of his mother. David married Ann Thomas "Annie" on 24 Mar 1837 in Llanllwchaiarn (a small parish near Newtown), Montgomeryshire, Wales. Annie was born 1812/1813 in Wales. 1841 British census finds them living on Horse Market Street, Newtown where David was employed in the woolen trade as a spinner. Three, possibly four, children were born in Newtown. They were; i. Elizabeth Jones "Betsy" b. 10 Nov 1838. Marriage and Death information is unknown. ii. Anna Jones b. 3 Jun 1841, d. Aft 1920 in New Haven. Married Albert Seeley Blackman (b. 27 Apr 1840, NY, d. 20 Jan 1890, New Haven), 24 Apr 1867 in St. Thomas Church, New Haven, CT. Resided at 137 St John, and 473 Elm. One adopted child, Ann Lillian Blackman, b. 28 Oct 1872, NY, d. 10 Dec 1954 , Branford, CT. iii. Robert Jones b. 14 May 1844., d. poss. 1910. iv. Possibly a David Jones b. 24 Jun 1848 but based on subsequent events, he must have died young. Around 1848, David left Wales for the United States. It is possible, though uncertain, that he sailed on the ship Ivanhoe from Liverpool, arriving in New York on 15 Aug 1848. Ann and her children, Elizabeth, Anna, and Robert, sailed a year later on the ship Liberty arriving in New York on 13 Sep 1849. On the ship manifest her occupation is given as "spinster". In the US Census, Williamstown district, of 1850, the Jones family is counted in Blackinton, a village in Berkshire Co., MA. Another child was born in Blackinton, v. David Vaughn Jones (2), b. 27 May 1851, d. 7 Aug 1915, Southington, CT. Married Mary Lucy Cadwell, 22 Sep 1875 ( a descendant of many colonial Hartford and New Haven families). A sixth child, Richard, was possibly born 8 Sep 1853. He must have died young. The Jones family (David (1), Ann, Elizabeth, Anna, Robert, and David (2)) removed from Blackinton and by 1860 were living in Rockville, Vernon Township, Tolland Co., CT. per the 1860 census, David was employed as a spinner. It is here we lose track the mother Ann, and children Elizabeth and Robert. Anna and David (2) are found in the 1870 census having removed to New Haven and Southington respectively. David (1) has not been definitively found in the 1870 census, but turns up again in the 1880 census living with his daughter, Anna (Jones) Blackman, at 137 St John St, employed as a "canvasser". The 1880 census is the last record found for David (1). The 1900 index has been searched with no luck. Given his age in 1880, and that his daughter Anna was still living in New Haven in 1900, without David (1), I have assumed he died there sometime between 1880 and 1900. However, fairly thorough searching of BMD indices and records available from the FHL for 1880 to 1898 have proven fruitless. Again, any information will be greatly appreciated. Richard Jones
