    2. I was told that some births went unregistered. My aunt who would have been well past 100 now knew the exact place {street address as well as town} of her birth but sadly, no birth certificate was ever found. I have a birth cert from an aunt born 1895 in New Britain which states that a $10 penalty was charged for failure to register a birthwithin the first week of the month next after the birth. I have a hard time understanding that and I expect my family did also since they spoke no English. In a letter written by my aunt, she states that it was the midwifes responsibility to resister the birth. I do not know how true that is. Well, my point is: If the family did not get around to registering the birth in a timely fashion, perhaps they did not have the $10 fine so never registered the birth. Just a thought.
