Per a Connecticut newspaper article dated 26 Jul 1936, John Blaskow was a Captain in the Austrian Guards and served directly under Emperor Franz Josef. He came to America in 1904, after becoming troubled with rheumatism in 1897. And was in the Turkish-Prussian war and after retirement from the army, he went into the wrought iron business in Vienna. The article further states he had a shop in Manhattan and made many wrought iron gates and such for many prominent town houses, churches and other buildings. After moving to CT, it is stated he is responsible for most of the wrought iron work of Yale's new buildings. I have New Haven City Directories Dated 1911, showing a John Belasco, employed at S.A. & Co. and beds at 74 Arch Dated 1920, showing a John Belasko, employed RR, home 6 Factory and John J. Belasko, Labor, home 724 Congress Ave. There is a John Blasco, listed in New Haven City directories 1941-44, married to Aniela (maiden name unknown) living at 32 High, West Haven, CT. As told to me by my mother Catherina/Katalin died when the children were young and may have died in NYC. Not knowing when John Blaskow moved to CT with family and or if John met and married Aniela prior. Note 2: From a passenger list I found at Ellis Island Records.org, Katalin Blaskow, age 37, coming from Szentgyörgy, Hungry on14 Jan 1908, on the ship Rydam from Rotterdam, South Holland along with Maria, 14y, Szanislo, 6y, Antonia, 4y, (my grandmother) and Gottlieb, 2y. John Blaskow was not with them. The ships manifest shows Katalin leaving her father Janos/Janas Folrich coming to NYC. -- Sincerely, D.R.
