The U.S. census indexes are not indexed by address. However, your Archibald McMuldroch was a boarder at 151 Canner Street, New Haven, New Haven, Connecticut in the 1910 U.S. census. Head of the household was George Wallace, age 46, b. Scotland, immigrated 1888, naturalized citizen, employed as a house carpenter and who was buying his own house. His wife was Margaret, age 43, to whom he had been married for 25 years, b. Scotland, immigrated 1889. Six of their seven children were residing with them and all had been born in Connecticut. Archibald was 41 years old, had been married for 18 years, b. Scotland, immigrated 1909, had not yet filed papers, and was also employed as a house carpenter. Hi listers Is there any chance SKS could check the 1910 census for me to see who was at 151, Canner St, New Haven. I have the immigration details of Archibald McMuldroch's wife and kids who give the above address as the place they were heading. I suspect a brother of the wife (a Robert Young) may have been in the area before Archie's emigration, of which I can find no record. I also checked the 1900 census index by genealogy.com. I looked at the Ham (probably Hans) Sorenson family which was living at 28 View Street in New Haven, New Haven, Conn. There was no Michael in that family. I also looked for 52 View Street and there was no Sorenson/Serenson/Sorensen/Serensen family living there in 1900. Probably the Sorenson family lived there in 1897 when Michael was born and then moved. You would need to know his father's name, or the name of the head of the household in 1900 in order to locate the family in the index. I do not think the family name was changed by the immigration people. There were multiple families with the Sorenson spelling in 1900 and only one woman with the Serenson spelling in the index for Connecticut. There were even more for 1910 with the addition of Sorensen (many of them probably changed the spelling of their own name or the census taker misspelled it). The same Sorenson family (Ham/Hans had died by then) was residing at 48 View Street, New Haven, Conn. in 1910. The mother, Betsy/Bessie was still alive. Carolee Smith
I checked the 1900 census index from genealogy.com. No Michael Sorenson, Serenson or Zerenson listed for Connecticut. I checked the Connecticut surname index for the 1900 census, there's a Minnie Serenson. No Serensens. Under Sorensen, the following are first names: Carlston, Christen, Frank, Frederick, Henry, Lawrence, Neil, Niels, Peter, Rasmus. Under Sorenson: Andrew, Anne, Charles, Charles L., Dennis, Ham, Hans, Hiram, Ida, Jens, John P, John W, Louis, Louis, Peter, Peter, Peter, Peter J., Samuel, Soren. I couldn't find any Zerensons. If any of those first names ring a bell, I can send you the census data for that name. Of course, as everyone knows, these indexes aren't perfect. (Nor, in all probability was my look-up, I could easily have missed a name.) In my personal experience I've found people by browsing the actual pages when I couldn't find them in the indexes. So hope someone can help you figure out the district that address is in. Michal "Reason is our soul's left hand, Faith her right, by these we reach divinity." John Donne
Hello, I am new to your list and hope someone would be able to help me. My grandfather was born at 52 View Street 1887 As I am sure you know the 1900 census is not indexed and it would help me a great deal if someone could tell me what district to look in for that address. He was Michael Serenson (story goes immigration changed the name from Sorensen) ( His name was listed as Zerenson on his birth cert. I guess a heavy Danish accent would do that). What would the churches in that area at that time be, both Catholic and possibly Luthern? His mother died in 1906. What was the funeral homes in that area and are they still in existance? Thereis St. Boniface which is German but the current church was built in 1923. Perhaps the parish is older and they had a church somewhere else. The address is 630 State Street, New haven, Ct. phone: 865-3365. St. Casimir's was Lithuanian but they closed it last year. ....don't know how you would get in touch with anyone there. It is on Greene Street in Wooster Square. That might be the place to look.
I checked St. Mary's Catholic Church for the marriage of my GGGrandaunt and her Prussian German husband Julius, with no luck. Is/was there a church in the New Haven area that catered to the Prussian/German population in the late 1860's? possibly another catholic Church? Julius F.L. (Von) Woedtke married Mary Jane Conroy. Looking for information on viscounts that worked for the Italian government helping Italian citizens settle into life in the USA. There was a viscount named DiCiccio who lived on Academy St?. HE was arrested after the war because he was part of the Italian government and living in the USA. Any leads would be helpful. Thanks, Kim

Evening Listers, This past June, I took a trip to New Haven, Connecticut, USA. After a week of collecting information from relatives, I went to the New Haven Free Public Library to lookup obituaries. In the process of copying my obituaries, I obtained others not related to me. I've already posted most of them on their respective surname boards but I'll also list them here. All are from the New Haven Register. I'm not familiar with the area, so I'm not making assumptions as to exact locations and only listing what is mentioned in the obituary. They are listed below with their dates of printing and page numbers. Please contact me offlist if anyone wants a photo of them. Saturday, May 9, 1931, p. 5 Cioffi, Madaline Volpe d. Hi everyone, July's roll call brought out a lot of information that, hopefully, generated a bingo or two. This month though, IS NOT about your individual lines... For as many people in our ancestries as we've found, there are many, many more that we've happened across who belong to the county but not to us. This month's challenge is about those miscellaneous people that are sitting in a shoebox under the bed, stuffed in a catch-all binder on a dusty shelf, molding in a desk drawer with the thought that one day you just might connect with them, but not yet. Great information for someone... ...just not not you. The challenge: Post that information about lines which are NOT yours, but were residents of the county at one time or another. Even if all you have is an obit or a single census extraction, that will count. The object is that the line isn't yours. Give as complete information about the person/family as you can ~ particularly regarding place and years. Post your data directly to the list, please. I'm only one person when, in fact, you want everyone to see it. Colleen P.S. If you did score a bingo on last month's roll call, won't you please share it with the rest of us? We'd love to partake in your happiness at making THE connection.
Judy When a baby is born, the hospital issues a nice birth notification to the parents. This is usually signed by the doctor, has the hospital seal on it and you are sent on your way. this is NOT a legal birth certificate, more of a courtesy tradition by the hospital. The birth mother fills out a form before she leaves the hospital. the babies name and the legal parents, their address, etc are on this questionaire form. From this form the hospital types up the 'pretty birth certificate'.....the hospital is responsible for sending the birth form the mother filled out to the state registry office. the state then puts all of the information onto the legal form, and this they certify as being the legal and only valid birth certificate. the birth parents then need to write to the state, send $5.00 (in CT) and the state registry office will then mail them the legal raised seal copy of the birth. this is the only one that is legal, and it is required for a passport, etc. in connecticut, the birth town gets a copy of the legal certificate, with the raised seal, and the state keeps the original one. in the state of connecticut, one must write to the birth town to get a copy of their legal birth certificate...or a death certificate...or a marriage certificate. hope this clears up some of the confusion for you. sandee Subject: [CTNEWHAV] Birth Certificates > Recently I received birth documents which my mother had kept.
