    1. Re: [CTNEWHAV] St Francis Orphanage; Ooops! Deep River's school is St. John's
    2. Robert
    3. I was mistaken here. The orphanage at Deep River was St. John's School for Boys. My aunt's husband and his two brothers were sent here at an early age after both of their parents had died. It was apparently a dreadful place to grow up (as, I suppose, is any orphanage)...severe discipline for minor infractions having been the rule. Still, it did not prevent the 3 boys from having become successful later in life. My aunt's husband, however, led a very private, secretive, and compartmentalized life which I believe to have been the result of his experience at St. John's. cuzmuz@cox.net wrote:I had a very interesting chat with the Sisters of Mercy archivist at their motherhouse in West Hartford, CT. Basically, we are out of luck. The original St. Francis home was opened by the good nuns in the city of New Haven. One of padres wanted it moved to a location with better air (on a hill in New Haven) St Francis home was moved. But not everyone wanted the orphanage moved. So, the Sisters of Charity came to New Haven to run the orphanage, also changing the name to St. Mary's orphanage as the sisters of Mercy took the name St. Francis with them to their new location. The Sisters of Charity stayed for about a decade and then asked the Sisters of Mercy to take over St Mary's. Which they did by closing the St Mary's facility in favor of St. Francis. Once again St Francis Orphanage would make a move, and in my lifetime. As far as the archdiocese of Hartford can tell, someone asked what to do with the old records, someone else said throw them out .........AND..........the r! ecords are gone. Sister said she had personnally spent many hours trying to track these records, they are gone. She has interviewed former residents of the old home, for sacrament information, hoping a locale church might have some records. So far they have not been found. ==== CTNEWHAV Mailing List ==== To post messages to the New Haven County, CT discussion list, send them to CTNEWHAV-L@rootsweb.com ============================== To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237

    1. [CTNEWHAV] Edward Perkins, 1600s, New Haven
    2. Steven C. Perkins
    3. Hello: I have been running a Parkins and Perkins Y DNA study. In the course of the study, we have learned that Edward Perkins and his descendants are NOT related to the John Perkins and Isaac Perkins lines of MA and NH. Their Y DNA signatures are from different haplogroups which means they are not descended from the same ancestors. Details are on the web page at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~scperkins/PerkinsDNA.html We are now looking to test male Perkins named descendants of Rev William Perkins of Topsfield, MA. Rev William is named as a half-brother to Edward Perkins of New Haven in a diary excerpt published in the Connecticut Magazine in about 1921. He is also so named in the book, Descendants of Edward Perkins of New Haven. Comparison of the results of a Y DNA test on a descendant of Rev William will answer the question of the possible relationship. We also are interested in testing descendants of Edmund Perkins of Boston, MA. Regards, Steven C. Perkins SPerkins@interaccess.com http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~scperkins/

    3. The St. Bernard's Cemetery is part of the Archdiocese of Hartford. I would suggest that everyone contact them regarding the difficulties getting information from St Bernard/St. Lawrence Cemetery office since the Archdiocese oversees both cemeteries. Another suggestion to send to the Archdiocese would be that someone - or a few - qualified genealogists - be permitted to microfilm/xerox/copy in some way, the records which are there, for everyone's use. It could be done on a volunteer basis. (Wonder if LDS would do it?) I have been to the cemetery office on several occasions and have found the information I needed. However, I was not able to obtain copies of the records. I had to write the information down. I was even most willing to pay for any copies I wanted. No luck! 1. [CTNEWHAV] Off topic--name of restaurant
    2. If you can remember the name of this restaurant--please it is a family trivia question which we can't answer. Back in the 1950-60's there was a restaurant on South End Road near the airport before you got to Morgan Point. If you were going down to the shore it would have been on your right up on a slight incline. I think it was near uriah street. I say it was Olivers but everyone else disagrees but can'tcome up with a name. Haven't been over that way in years but we always went by on our way to the beach. Does anyone remember the day camp at Morgan Point? And that tiny little market where you could get ice cream? Sometimes you just missall that--big condos down there now. Judy
