    1. [CTNEWHAV] CT Vital Records
    2. June Woodham
    3. Hi All, I am getting very disenchanted with CT Vital Record offices. You may recall that I had inquired of the list as to how long New Haven takes to respond to a request. Well, I finally heard from them. One, they found no record of and changed the "copy fee" to "research fee". The other one I had requested was for a Marietta (Bassett) Clark who d. in New Haven in 1881. They sent me Mary Emma Clark, who d. 1894. The maiden name looks like Chipman. A few months earlier I went through this same thing with the State Death Index. I had requested a death record for William E. Patterson, b. New Haven, 1845-1850, d. 1896 or later. They sent me William Peters, d. Meriden, June 1898, age 65, making him b. 1833. I have been dealing with CT cities and small towns for a good many years and have never had a problem. They have either sent what I asked for or notified me that they didn't have any record. Is this a new policy for out of state people? The state already charges us triple what they charge residents. As we have all noticed with Social Security, NARA, online subscriptions, etc.; genealogy is big business! I would advise anyone contacting the Death Index to not send money in advance. They will send the information but not the certificate. If you get the correct information, you can then order the d.c. from the proper town. June

    1. [CTNEWHAV] AOL and Rootsweb
    2. If you subscribe to Rootsweb Review, you can just delete this...I am passing along information that appeared in this week's mailing. If you are an AOLer, please read on. If you belong to another ISP, you may also want to read on, as the topic of what to do if you suddenly stop receiving Rootsweb mail is addressed. Oh, and a quick thank you to whomever posted the news that we can get onto Heritage Quest with our CT library card number... I love it! >From the Rootsweb Review: AOLers and RootsWeb: New List and Some Tips Since AOL subscribers make up a large percentage of our mailing list members, RootsWeb has created a new mailing list that is being announced today. The mailing list is named AOLers-RootsWeb. It is to assist AOL users with questions related to their use of the RootsWeb mailing lists. Hopefully this new resource will help to forestall any future difficulties from arising between AOL and the RootsWeb mailing lists. The new list may also prove helpful to RootsWeb list administrators who are not AOL subscribers in answering questions for their list members who do use AOL. It will provide a place to direct AOL users where they can obtain accurate up-to-date information and assistance with RootsWeb mailing list issues that are specific and unique to AOL users. You will find this new mailing list categorized on the mailing list webpage at http://lists.rootsweb.com under OTHER/RootsWeb Support/ The direct link is: [This is a 2-line URL; copy and paste carefully]: http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/other/RootsWeb_Support/ AOLers-RootsWeb.html During the past week or so RootsWeb mailing list subscribers who use AOL (America Online) as their ISP (Internet Service Provider) to receive list mail experienced a disruption of service that lasted several days. Family history researchers, who are often addicted to their daily "fix" of mail from their favorite RootsWeb lists, began sending e-mails to their lists in an attempt to ascertain whether or not the lists were working, for some, alarm set in. Don't panic if RootsWeb's list mail doesn't appear to be reaching your mailbox as it normally should. Instead, do the following: 1. Check the HelpDesk's yellow announcement box for news of any technical problems at RootsWeb or with your ISP's delivery of list mail from RootsWeb. http://helpdesk.rootsweb.com/ or click on HELP tab at the top of any RootsWeb page. 2. Check your currently subscribed lists here: http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ or click on the PASSWORDS tab at the top of any RootsWeb page. 3. Check the threaded mailing list archives to view the current month/year messages for your lists at: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ 4. Contact the list administrator for help or information by writing to: LISTNAME-admin@rootsweb.com (replace the word LISTNAME with the actual name of the list -- using no -L or -D). NOTE: If there is a general problem involving RootsWeb mail delivery to a specific ISP and the list administrator to whom you are writing also uses the same ISP, he/she probably will not receive your inquiry for the duration of the problem with that ISP. 5. Contact your ISP's tech support representative and explain that RootsWeb list mail is not spam and this is e-mail you wish to receive. Enlist the support of your ISP in resolving the matter. Internet Service Providers should be more than willing to assist you -- their paying customer -- so that you are able to receive the mail you want. Here is what NOT to do if you suspect you are not receiving your mailing list messages: 1. Do not send repeated messages to the list asking if the list is working or if anyone has received your message. 2. Do not send any "TESTING" messages to a list. Remember that just because you are not receiving a message you have sent to the list doesn't mean that other list subscribers are not seeing your repeated messages and becoming annoyed by them. The mailing lists are for genealogical research for a specific subject and not for test messages. Use the above guidelines instead to help resolve any non- receipt of mail problems. You will find guidelines concerning non-receipt of RootsWeb list mail in a recent issue of the RootsWeb Review. You might want to print out this information and save for handy reference. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/review/20040107.txt Robin List Administrator CTNEWHAV (New Haven County, Connecticut) KRUPA surname

    1. [CTNEWHAV] North Guilford/FOWLER/BARTLETT
    2. I am researching the Fowler line in connection with the Coan and Bartlett lines of North Guilford/Guilford, CT. Other surnames that enter in are Chittenden, Cruttendon, etc., with various spellings. There are plenty more, but my files are for a couple of weeks inaccessible. The Bartlett line came on the Queen Anne in 1623 to MA, and the Coan line apparently came in the early 1700's to America. My ggrandfather, Samuel Coan Bartlett, was born in North Guilford, CT, in 1844. Frances

    3. Hi Grace, Thank you for a nice quick answer and then the Talcott site. I was so excited, I kept seeing names that I recognized, but never found the ancestors that I already have, completely documented, descending from my GGrandfather Ezra Lonzo Fowler, bn 1842, Willoughby, Lake County, Ohio going through his family to his death and all of his children and their descendants. I would have bet money I would find the ancestors I am looking for in that list. Ezra named his first son George A. Fowler, and the names Ezra, Charles, Robert, William, David, Edward run through all the families. Ezra maintained in all census records that "his father was born in NY and his mother was "born at sea" coming from Scotland. I looked in New Haven, CT on a tip because I know children and census enumerators often make mistakes on "places of birth". I will go back and look some more, but right now, I am discouraged. Where can I get the Barbour Records for Guilford? I have Ancestry.com.
