    1. [CTNEWHAV] Trumbull Co, OH History Book/SMITH
    2. Sue - In the History of Trumbull County book that you cite, do you find mention of the surname SMITH. Supposedly my ggg(?) grandfather, Stephen Smith, was born in Warren, OH (which I understand was in Trumbull Co), in 1786, and I also understand that Warren did not exist in that year. Thank you in advance for any help. Frances

    3. Hi John, This is long - not sure if you got it so resending it. Austin info Anonymous History of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties : with illustrations and biographical sketches. Cleveland: H.Z. Williams & Bro., 1882, 1163 pgs. Pg. 305-306 CHARLES AUSTIN Charles Austin, who is conducting a barber shop in Portland, was born in this place in 1858. His father, Gideon Austin, was a native of Connecticut, born in the year 1824, and on leaving that state he became one of the pioneers settlers of Poland, where he made his home until his death, which occurred on the 21st of July, 1890. His father came to Ohio somewhat later than his son Gideon. He bore the name of Eli Austin, and his death occurred June 15, 1825. Gideon Austin was united in marriage to Dorothy Faukell, of Poland, who was born in Boardman Township, Mahoning county in 1831; she is still living in her native township and on the 25th of February, 1903; attained the age of seventy-two years. Mr. and Mrs. Austin were married about 1849 and became the parents of ten children, seven of whom reached mature years and were living at the time of the father’s death. Two of the family still survive. Henry being a painter of Columbiana, Ohio. (this narrative continues about Charles Austin. I can copy it if you need it) Anonymous History of Trumbull and Mahoning Counties : with illustrations and biographical sketches. Cleveland: H.Z. Williams & Bro., 1882, 1163 pgs. CHAPTER IX LEAVITTSBURG (a portion has been deleted which doesn’t pertain the following except in a lateral way) Samuel Leavitt, nicknamed Squire Sam, was born in Connecticut February 26, 1756. He visited the Reserve for the first time in 1800, and made a purchase of land in Warren township, adjoining the farm on which John Leavitt, Jr. afterwards settled. ‘Squire Leavitt with his wife moved from Connecticut to Warren in 1802 and made an improvement on his farm. His was probably the first house in the center of the township. He had married in Connecticut Mrs. Abigail Kent Austin, mother of Benajah Austin. The fruit of this union was one child, Lydia, afterwards wife of Judge Francis Freeman. Mrs. Leavitt died September 4, 1816, aged sixty-six years. Mr. Leavitt removed to Warren in 1817 to a house on Main Street. He married for his second wife, Mrs. Margaret Kibbee Parsons, mother of George Parsons, Sr. (I have edited the next part as it does not pertain to Austins) Benajah Austin, another of the pioneers of the neighborhood of Leavittsburg, and a son of Mrs. Samuel Leavitt by a former husband, was born in Suffield, Connecticut in the year 1779. From Connecticut he removed to Rupert, Vermont , and from there to the Reserve in the year 1803. He married that spring, Olive Harmon, and has settled on what has been known as the Murberger Farm, which was his first purchase. He soon afterwards removed to a farm in the center of Warren township , now owned by Harmon Austin, his son. Mr. Austin was one of the early public men, having commissioner for twelve years, part of the time while the whole Reserve was embraced by Trumbull County. He also served as deputy sheriff one year and sheriff two terms. Mr. Austin, however, was essentially a farmer, and during his whole life, devoted his untiring energies to that employment. His family consisted of six children: Hiram died at Chardon; Julius, living at Braceville; Enos, living at Youngstown; Amelia (deceased March 1876), wife of S. A. Potter; Benajah died at Warren; and Harmon residing at Warren. Mr. Austin died in February 1849. His son Benajah read medicine, and practiced a short time in Warren, but losing his health he retired on a farm. He died in March, 1871, aged fifty-eight years. Harmon Austin, who succeeded to the old homestead farm, was born in 1817. He lived on the farm until 1870 when he removed to Warren, his present home. (there is more about Harmon and his wife and family. I am not sure you are interested in that information. If so, please e-mail me at geneaalgoyhome@hotmail.com and I’ll send it on.) I have put the information you need for the source of this information. 3. Does anyone have any links with or knowledge of Wallace Gordon born 1911/12. He married twice: first to Ellen and 2ndly to Mary [maiden names unknown at present] with whom he had 3 children [names unknown at the moment] born in Wolcott/Waterbury. Wallace died in August 1978. He was the son of Harry Morton Gordon and his wife Mary. The family appears in the 1932 New Haven Census living at 39 Arch [St, Dr, Rd - it doesn't say] when Harry was aged 65 and his wife Mary 54. Aside from Wallace, who was then aged 17 and working in newspaper advertising, the other family members were: Charles, born 1905; Mary b. 1907; Susan b. 1914; and Ann b. 1918. I am very keen to make contact with any present day descendants as well as learning more in general about this Gordon line. I hope someone can help me. Alistair Gordon, London, England

    3. Hi I saw some messages about folks running into difficulties. I'd like to add my "story". I sent a note on February 12th requesting 3 records. I received a message back today (not too bad) that they do not accept personal checks. I have to send a money order. Each certified copy (birth, marriage or death) costs $5.00 each. It didn't say anything about being in-state or out-of-state. So I was happy with their timely response. I'll resubmit and let you know how that goes. Kathy Esche

    3. some towns in CT will accept personal checks, some will not. it is always best to call the VS office before ordering to see what they require. in CT all certified copies of B/M/D are $5 each.....have seen them much higher in other states. you cannot get a copy in CT that is not certified. used to be, if it wasn't certified, a photo copy was $2......not any longer possible. you did get a quick response time from new haven.......they are notoriously slow. maybe they responded back so quickly to help 'empty out their in-basket' :) they won't even consider looking up your information until all of the T's are crossed, and the i's are dotted. sandee > [Original Message] > From: Pete <eschep@myeastern.com> > To: <CTNEWHAV-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 2/17/2004 5:53:32 PM > Subject: [CTNEWHAV] Requesting Vital Records > > Hi > > I saw some messages about folks running into difficulties. 1. [CTNEWHAV] New Haven Vital Records
    2. Sue Christensen-Nass
    3. Hi listers... May I make a suggestion to get around the New Haven Vital Records office? You can order the LDS films that have ALL the births, marriages and deaths that New Haven has ANY records of. You will find the names in those LDS films. I don't think the LDS films have the indexes of names, although they might have films of those as well. The only thing you will not find is films of the actual birth, marriage and death certificates. Those are in separate books which is where the registrar gets the actual copy. In the books, especially if it's a marriage, you will find what church/Minister/Priest performed the ceremony. Then you can write to the particular church for their records which may have more information than the Vital Records record has. I have been in the Vital Records archives and done my own research. I did notice that it was a very busy understaffed office but also found the people working there to be very nice and VERY busy with 'walk in' requests. Hope this helps a little. 1. [CTNEWHAV] William Shortall
    2. SHORTALL FAMILY
    3. I am trying to connect a William Shortall living in Meriden City in 1900 with my family in Ireland. Summary: William Shortall, son of Patrick or John married Mary Anne Bacon in Mountmellick Co Laois (formerly Queen's County), Ireland in 1869. Children born in Mountmellick - Anne 1871, Patrick 1874, Mary Elizabeth 1875, John 1877. Child born in Connecticut - William 1885. 1900 USA Census - Family living at 1 Mothe? Place, Kenden township, Meriden City. William immigrated to the USA in 1883 and Mary, Elizabeth, Annie and Patrick immigrated in 1884. John wasn't listed in the census in 1900. William was listed as a gardener in 1885 on William's birth and in the 1900 census. Family story - William died in America and left 4 children - Lillie, Annie, Pat and Willie who were alive in 1957. Has anyone any information on this family? I would welcome guidance on how to proceed to find descendents and / or other information. I come from Co Laois and live in Co Meath and would be happy to help with queries here if I can. Dr. Patrick J. Shortall, Eastham Road, Bettystown, Co. Meath.

    1. [CTNEWHAV] New Haven vital records
    2. Yes, June, New Haven does keep the fee even if they do not send the certificate requested. Something they don't tell you in advance. But the fee is $5.00 for a certificate, in-state or an out-of-state request. That is set by State Statute. I think every time someone gets burned they should write to our Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz at 30 Trinity Street, Hartford, CT 06106. Our state claims to be very conscience of our ethics these days. When you write for a certificate, that is exactly what you should get or the money should be returned. I would return the incorrect certificates and ask for the correct ones or a refund.
