June, Bummer. My records were much more recent (1950's or so) so that might make a difference. Hi Kathy, You were indeed very fortunate! Back in Oct. I wrote to the State for William E. Patterson's death certificate. I gave them his parent's names, occupation, b. abt. 1845, approx. date of death 1895/96 and that he lived all his life in New Haven. In Nov. I received a certificate for William Peters, same occupation, residence: Cheshire, b. 1833, d. 1898. I sent it back to them with a note explaining that only the first name & occupation matched my request. Yesterday, Mar. 13, I received William Peters cert. back again with a form letter and a yellow marker specifying that this was the only record that matched my request. And, also, that I did not include a fee!! Do you think that they would have sent me this cert. twice if I hadn't sent a fee? So, needless to say, when New Haven sent me Mary Emma (Chipman) Clark, DOD 15 Sep. 1894 instead of Emma Jean (Bassett) Clark, DOD 15 Oct. 1901; I didn't even bother to send it back. However, I will no longer write for certificates. I would rather pay someone who resides there to get them for me. This is the 4th one I have paid for that I didn't get. By the way, if anyone on the list has a William Peters or Mary Emma Clark fitting the above descriptions, let me know and I will send you these worthless (to me) certificates. Hi A few weeks back folks were telling about their experiences requesting records.I'd like to say that my experience was very positive. Initially, I sent in for 3 records from New Haven but sent a personal check. Within 2 weeks I got a form back saying that a bank check was required. I resent my request and about 2 weeks after that, I had my copies!
Is there AKS out there that would do a Newhaven Highschool yearbook look-up in the years 1935 through 1946? If so, I have three female McCreary cousins that I would love to find. They may still be living, I hope. John C. Hall, Petaluma, California
I am also interested in the Reilly name as it would seem that my great grandmother was a Reilly. Judy has been a great source of help to my genealogical efforts. While we are unable to connect with the Phillip Cronan family, our family had similar names and grew up in New Haven from apx 1852 to present. My parents moved to New York and then we to New Jersey and Cronan family connections have disappeared through the years. Thanks to your website I have been able to connect with other family names in the area. Connie Researching: Cronan, Mcgovern, Galligan, Reilly, Quirk, Martin, Gilmartin, McCarthy, Goggins
This Cronan clan is very elusive--one reason is that so many had the same first name. The two small clues I have are: A small slip of paper indicating that they came from "The shadows of Maynooth College" and my husband's cousin who is 83 and lives in Offaly and she said the Cronan family came from County Longford {and she had no doubt about this}. There were two Philip Cronans--father and son. Son died a young man before his father. Both buried St. Bernards cemetery new haven. They actually lived in Orange and west haven connecticut {Still do}. Judy
It is the REILLY surname I am interested in, rather than Cronan. ladybug ----- Original Message ----- From: <JUDYSPHIL@aol.com> To: <CTNEWHAV-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 13, 2004 10:08 AM Subject: [CTNEWHAV] Cronan > This Cronan clan is very elusive--one reason is that so many had the same > first name. Have Patrick Cronan and Bridget Reilly Cronan who arrived in Ct. Settled in New Haven about 1852 with son, Michael. Arrived from Ireland according to my grandfather's bio in A Modern History of New Haven and Eastern New Haven County. Otherwise this is a brickwall for me.
I attended HillHouse High from 1946-1950. I believe that it became New Haven High School and unfortunately I do not know where records are kept. I now live in Baltimore, Maryland. Good hunting. Jerry Hoffman

Hi Donice Try the Ethnic Heritage Center, 270 Fitch St., New Haven, CT 06515. They have New Haven Public School Attendance Records from 1851. Hillhouse is still in existance. The time frame I'm searching is 1896-1932. The Public Library doesn't appear to have an online resource; I've sent a query to the New Haven School District but am hoping a fellow genealogist knows something and can spur this part of our quest a bit faster.
