    1. [CTNEWHAV] Bishop family
    2. Does anyone have any connection to the Bishop family that lived in New Haven (as opposed to the Guilford branch of the Bishops)? My Bishop "stone wall" is Louisa Bishop (born in 1805) who lived in New Haven and married Ira Bishop there 30 Jan 1825. I have had no luck determining her parents, but I do know that she was married at her father's house on State Street. It is possible that her father was Stephen Bishop who lived on State Street at that time, but in analyzing the Bishops in the 1810 and 1820 census, Stephen doesn't fit if you trust the listing of female children and their ages. It's all VERY frustrating, but of course that's what makes genealogy so addicting!! Bill Coley Orange, CT

    1. Re: [CTNEWHAV] David & Mary Bassett
    2. You should not have any problem finding info on Bassett family in New Haven. Quite prominent they were. There is still a facade on a building on Chapel Street from Bassett Hardware. Check the Historical Society. I think they had a house and property in Hamden which is now a baseball field and park. Judy

    1. [CTNEWHAV] David & Mary Bassett
    2. Hi,    In the 1850 New Haven census there is a David Bassett b. abt. 1810, w. Mary b. 1812 with children: George age 16; Charles age 13; Philo age 8; Hiram age 5 and Emily, 8 months.  Living in the same house is George T. Clark age 22 and Mary Etta Bassett Clark age 17 with son Marshall age 8 months.     Does any one know who these Bassetts are?  At first I thought them to be David & Mary A. of Milford, but the known children's names don't match and that David d. in 1861.  The David mentioned above was still listed in the 1870 census.   Thank you ever so much for any clues at all as to who these people belong to. June

    3. Bill: Check this page: http://www.rci.rutgers.edu/~sperkins/hperkanc.html Use your browser search to search for number 52, Richard Sperry, b 1606, d 1698. Supposedly son of John Sperry of Thurleigh Parish, Bedfordshire, Eng. That is not verified and there are other Fathers given for him. Dennis family name is not known. She is often said to be a Goodyear, or a Honeyman, or a Freeman, but there is no documentary evidence to support any of those family names. Take Care, Steven C. 2. Dear Bill, I have a John, b. 9 Jan 1649, christened 16 Feb 1606, at Thurleigh, Bedford, England, died either 1693 or 1698 (I couldn't decipher the last digit) in New Haven. Is this who you were looking for? Richard is the 7g-grandfather of my husband, Tom Mitchell. How are you related to him? I have Richard's wife as Dennis GOODYEAR, born about 1624 in England, died 1707 in New Haven. Dennis is one of those given names that used to be feminine and masculine, but is now masculine in our society. Dunno why!! In Latin it is Dionysia, female, and Dionysius, male. I hope you are a new cousin!! Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/WZ.2ADE/1346.1 Message Board Post: Dave, I don't have any specific info on your family, but in case info in Guilford is scarce I thought I'd suggest a possible alternative. I have Johnsons in my line who were just on the other side of the Guilford line in Branford in the 1700. Your guy could have descended from them. If you strike out in Guilford, try Branford. Do be sure to check the Families of Early Guilford book, though. Diane

    3. See my reply of earlier today for parents of Eliz. Thompson and source of this information. I am descended from your Benjamin Bradley's older sister Martha Bradley, and their parents were William Bradley and Alice (da. Roger) Prichard. For further information on this line, including Prichard information that I was able to find in a library in Springfield, Mass., consult the following excellent genealogy site posted by Walter Gilbert: http://www.otal.umd.edu/~walt/gen/htmfile/frames.htm You may find it useful to share your own descendant information with Walter Gilbert and ask to be included in his "cousins" list. He has done a monumental job of assembling, organizing, and posting information for the benefit of everyone. I am impressed and delighted every time I visit his growing site, and I commend him highly for it. 1. [CTNEWHAV] WARNING: PLEASE READ re: <familydiscovery.com>
    2. Colleen Pustola
    3. Hi everyone, As before, this is a mass mailing to all the discussion groups I maintain and/or do a Sunday Morning Coffee for... This is an old subject with continually new twists. Most of you already know how I feel about Family Discovery ... and I'm here with the latest update... I have just received a genealogy bulletin from GenTruth, aka <FamilyDiscovery.com> saying: "25% of your Genealogy Membership Will Go Directly To The National Disaster Relief Fund of the American Red Cross." If I'm receiving it, you will too ~ if you haven't already. EVERYONE BEWARE!!! I remind you all that GenTruth is a cover site for <FamilyDiscovery.com>. Now they are advertising a "one time access fee fund raising offer" of $49.99 with (supposedly) 25% of the fee being donated. They advertise that this is "Expiring Very Soon!" and that you should "Subscribe today" to "save over 50% off the regular $119.99 price." If so many of us weren't already aware of what they do, their patriotic flag and ribbon theme just might work. They haven't changed; they're still the same old story, I'm afraid. Please everyone, keep your checkbooks, wallets and credit cards put away. ***ARE YOU A NEWBIE?*** Here's the lowdown on these scam artists: To our newbies ~ Family Discovery is just what I said in the last sentence... rip-offs. This is becoming an old subject among those of us who have been doing online genealogy for a while, but you need to be made aware... Family Discovery links their pages to free Rootsweb <http://www.rootsweb.com> sites and archive pages, GenWeb sites, and privately owned sites ... sites on which all the information is already FREE! They are doing this without permission and are currently under investigation. Please, heed the warning. A new ad from them has begun to circulate that will tug at your heartstrings following the 11 September attack. This site is NOT to be trusted! While I'm at it, I'd better warn you of their newest, sister site... GenSeeker, in case another message is floating around that I'm not aware of yet. Though I haven't heard any more about it from anyone (yet), it's still a site owned by the same person(s) and building itself under the same premise as Family Discovery. I've been to their newest site and seen what they're up to. Instead of the "special rate" you're charged $20 more. However, when clicking on their "freesearch link," the unwary customer is taken to the familydiscovery.com site. GenSeeker describes itself as "the most comprehensive easy to use collection of online records ever compiled." Of course it is, if they link to every free website they can find! Save your money and do the search yourself! You DO NOT need to pay for a service that is already free if you know where to look. If you need assistance, send a message to the list and state in the top line of your message that you're a newbie needing help; you'll probably get more than you can handle! :) Gene Olson has refocused his Anti-Family Discovery Web Site and broadened its scope. It now includes any company that uses illegal or unethical business practices. You newbies to online genealogy would be wise to go to his site and read up on this company so you won't be ripped off. Click on the following link and you'll be taken directly to his site: <http://www.compuright.net/badbusiness/>. Gene's new email address is <[email protected]>. It appears another site has taken over where Gene Olson left off. This page <http://www.imagin.net/~tracers/familydiscovery.htm> has messages from quite a few people who have stepped forward to tell you of their dealings with Family Discovery. It would be in your best interests to check it out, if only for a quick scan. With us all trying to recover from a most traumatic experience, I find it appalling that Family Discovery would stoop so low at a time like this to continue their scam. Please everyone, check out the two sources I've given you here and protect yourselves. I hope this finds you all having a peaceful Sunday. Colleen

    3. "Families of Ancient New Haven" by Donald Lines Jacobus, page 262 (Bradley Family) includes the following entry: Benjamin, b. 8 Apr. 1657 ... m (1) 29 Oct 1677 (New Haven Vitals) -- Elizabeth da. John & Ellen (Harrison) Thompson, b. 3 June 1657 (New Haven Vitals), d 3 Nov 1718 (New Haven Vitals) ... Originally published as "The New Haven Genealogical Magazine" Vols 1-8, this set is Call # R929.10 in the New Haven Public Library. Specific pages of this work can be faxed to your local public library at minimal cost through the Interlibrary Loan program. Bound multivolume copies of this work may also be found in some genealogical libraries such as the Local History Room of the Berkshire Athenaeum (Public Library) in Pittsfield, Massachusetts. It can also be found on CD-ROM, from which many list members may be able to do look-ups and respond to you privately--the maker of the CD-ROM requires that the results of look-ups on the CD not be posted on any public genealogy lists. The above information was extrracted directly from pages I photocopied from the original work at the New Haven Public Library. 3. Hi Marilyn, Here are some of my references. I am a descendant of John & Ellen through their daughter Mary: -Sue Genealogies of Connecticut Families, Vol. III, Pg 473: John Thompson, called "Senior" to distinguish him from his nephew the "Mariner," married 25 Feb. 1650, Ellen Harrison, probably a sister of the Thomas Harrison who married the widow of John Thompson of East Haven. He died 14 Dec. 1674, and on Pg 474: 9 June 1675 "Ellin ye relict" presented the inventory of his estate, which was distributed to herself, to Samuel Lines in right of Mary his wife, to Abraham Bradlye in right of Hanna his wife, to Elizabeth, and to "the younger daughter" (County Court Records, vol 1, p 86). His widow died 8 Apr. 1690, and in her will of Oct 1689 she mentions her daughters Mary, Hannah, and Elizabeth, her sons-in-law Abraham and benjamin Bradlye, and her grandchild Sarah daughter of her daughter Elizabeth (New Haven Probate Records, vol 2, p 41). Children: i. Mary, b. 24 Apr. 1652; m. (1) Nov 1674, Samuel Lines, b. Apr 1649, d 1692; m (2) John Hitchcock of Wallingford, who d. 6 July 1716; m (3) 18 Apr 1717, Samuel Clark. ii. Anne or Hannah, b 22 Sept 1654; m 25 Dec 1673, Abraham Bradley, b 24 Oct 1650, d 19 Oct 1718; d 26 Oct 1718. iii. Elizabeth, b 3 june 1657; m 29 Oct 1677, Benjamin Bradley, b 8 Apr 1657, d 1728; d 3 Nov 1718. iv. Lydia, b 13 Mar 1664; evidently "the youngest daughter" referred to in 1675; d before 1689 and probably before 1682, as she is not mentioned in her Uncle Williams will. v, Sarah, b 25 Mar 1667; d 1669. Families of Ancient New Haven, Vol II, Pg 262: Benjamin Bradley, b 8 Apr 1657 NHV, bp 12 Apr 1657 NHC1, d between Apr & June 1728; Sgt; m (1) 29 Oct 1677 NHV-Elizabeth da. John & Ellen (Harrison) Thompson, b 3 June 1657 NHV, d 3 Nov 1718 NHV. Families of Early Guilford, CT, Vol. I, Pg 116: Benjamin Bradley, son of William and Alice (Pritchard), was born 8 April 1657. 3. Looking for information on James and Jennie Fields of New Haven. James was born in 1864 and his wife Jennie in 1866. Looking for Jennie Fields maiden name. They had daughters Henrietta, born 1896 and Sarah born 1898. They are shown on the 1900 census living in New Haven. Julia Leahy born 1892 and Jennie Leahy born 1894 are listed as boarders with this family. The Leahy girls were orphans and it's a possibility they were related to the Fields. Michael and Mary Leahy from New York City were parents of the girls. These girls were in an orphanage for a time but I don't know which one or how they ended up in CT. Can anyone shed some light on this?
